Source kind: theory
Recorded technique: Adiabatic calculation: the vibrational-rotational wave functions chi_vJ(R) of the adiabatic potential (Poll and Wolniewicz 1978, ref. 2), and the matrix elements <vJ|X|v’J’> = integral chi_vJ(R) X(R) chi_v’J’(R) dR (Eq. 1) of the clamped-nucleus quadrupole moment function Q(R) (ref. 2) and of the parallel and perpendicular polarizability functions alpha_par(R) and alpha_perp(R) of Kolos and Wolniewicz (1967, ref. 7 = kolos_1967), for H2, HD, D2, HT, DT and T2, v = 0-5 (p. 1719-1720). ‘Nonadiabatic contributions to these quantities are, therefore, expected to be quite small and we will not consider them here’ (p. 1719).
Materials in structured entries: D2, H2

Curation notes#
Journal pages 1719-1723 = PDF pages 1-5 (page n of the PDF is p. 1718 + n). Identity checked on the first page (the library’s VALIDATED_WITH_WARNINGS). Received 19 July 1984. Only H2 and D2 are curated materials; HD, HT, DT and T2 (the other four columns of every table) are not transcribed. H2 and D2 are single rovibrational levels here: no ortho:para mixture enters.
WHAT IS TAKEN. Tables 5-10 (pp. 1721-1723), the matrix elements of the parallel (Tables 5, 7, 9) and perpendicular (6, 8, 10) polarizability between the ground vibrational level (v = 0, J) and the level (v, J’) for v = 0-5: Delta J = 0 (Tables 5-6, J = 0-5), J’ = J + 2 (Tables 7-8, J = 0-3) and J’ = J - 2 (Tables 9-10, J = 2-5), ‘in atomic units’ (a0^3, e^2 a0^2/E_h). One dataset per table, gas and final v, one row per J (id <par|perp>_<dJ0|dJp2|dJm2>_v<v>_<gas>): 68 datasets, 320 values, raman_transition_polarizability with invariant parallel or perpendicular (the vocabulary’s component form). v = 0 of Tables 5-6 are the diagonal elements (the polarizability of the level); v = 0 of Tables 7-8 the pure rotational S(J) elements; v >= 1 the vibrational Raman Q, S and O lines of the v-0 bands. The overtones (v >= 2) are tabulated as compactly as the fundamentals and are kept; their small elements carry few significant digits.
STATIC. The paper does not say ‘static’, but its polarizability functions are Kolos and Wolniewicz’s 1967 static ones (kolos_1967: ‘Static only’), and its diagonal elements reproduce kolos_1967’s static per-level values (see CHECKED). Recorded with parameters.wavelength_nm = inf.
MEAN AND ANISOTROPY (for review): the invariants follow as alpha_mean = (alpha_par + 2 alpha_perp)/3 and gamma = alpha_par - alpha_perp of the same element (the Q-line strength needs both, an S or O line only gamma). Evaluated from the tables (scratch, 2026-09-27), a.u.: H2 Q(J) of the 1-0 band, J = 0-5: mean 0.73923, 0.74027, 0.74234, 0.74544, 0.74953, 0.75462; gamma 0.61001, 0.61175, 0.61524, 0.62049, 0.62741, 0.63612. D2 Q(J): mean 0.61633, 0.61677, 0.61765, 0.61898, 0.62075, 0.62294; gamma 0.50004, 0.50077, 0.50224, 0.50443, 0.50735, 0.51101. Pure rotational S(J), gamma of <0J|..|0J+2>, J = 0-3: H2 2.0351, 2.0500, 2.0725, 2.1025; D2 1.9639, 1.9713, 1.9825, 1.9974. 1-0 band S(J) gamma: H2 0.57081, 0.54630, 0.52323, 0.50152; D2 0.47749, 0.46313, 0.44943, 0.43633; O(J), J = 2-5: H2 0.65436, 0.68591, 0.71931, 0.75486; D2 0.52513, 0.54204, 0.56016, 0.57906.
CHECKED (2026-09-27): the diagonal elements (Tables 5-6, v = 0) give mean and anisotropy equal to kolos_1967’s static per-level Table III for J = 0-5 within one unit of the fourth decimal (H2 J = 0: 5.41380 and 2.0238 against 5.4139 and 2.0239; D2 J = 0: 5.34520 and 1.9584 against 5.3453 and 1.9584). rychlewski_1983’s Table VII (static column, H2 only, not extracted there) prints alpha_00,10 = 0.74006, gamma_00,10 = 0.61204, alpha_00,02 = 5.4304, gamma_00,02 = 2.0409: 0.11 %, 0.33 %, 0.06 % and 0.28 % above these (another polarizability function).
UNCERTAINTY: none is stated. ‘Comparison with experiment has shown that for these simple molecules the theoretical calculations are highly reliable’ (p. 1719) is general.
STRUCTURE (tools/extract/hunt_1984.py): every H2 and D2 cell was compared with the table images. Table 7’s v = 1 block is shifted one column in the library’s cells (the page prints ‘v J’ of its first row as ‘1 0’ with a stray mark); Table 5’s D2 column is headed ‘v_2’ in the cells. ERRATUM: Table 5 prints D2’s <00|alpha_par|20> as 0.05292, without a minus sign; the neighbouring J = 1-5 elements (-0.05304 ... -0.05478), every other v = 2 element of Tables 5-8 in all six columns, and the smooth J dependence show it is -0.05292 (corrected below).
NOT TAKEN (notes only): - Table 1 (p. 1720), the adiabatic dissociation energies D_vJ (cm-1) for v, J = 0-5 and the reduced masses (a.u.): H2 919.0764, D2 1835.2395. H2: D_00 = 36117.572, D_10 = 31955.529, D_01 = 35999.077; D2: D_00 = 36748.162, D_10 = 33754.207, D_01 = 36688.379. Differences give adiabatic level energies (H2: G(1) - G(0) = 4162.043 cm-1 for J = 0, F(1) - F(0) = 118.495; D2: 2993.955 and 59.783); nonadiabatic corrections are not included (the paper cites Wolniewicz 1983, ref. 1, for them). - Tables 2-4 (p. 1721), the quadrupole-moment elements <0J|Q|vJ>, <0J|Q|vJ+2>, <0J|Q|vJ-2> (a.u., with the footnote: ‘Many authors use a definition in which the quadrupole moment has half the size of the one used in this paper’, i.e. Q = R^2 - 2(3z^2 - r^2) summed as defined on p. 1719). H2 <00|Q|00> = 0.9671, <00|Q|10> = 0.1758; D2 0.9517 and 0.1478. No vocabulary quantity; not needed for Raman. - The ‘complete tables’ (v, v’ = 0-5, J = 0-5, total energies, <R^-2>) deposited with the Depository of Unpublished Data, NRC Canada (p. 1723): not in the library.
REPRODUCTIONS ELSEWHERE (not re-pointed: they are values computed from these, not reproduced datasets): mizrahi_1985_h2d2’s Table II quotes Hunt et al.’s H2 alpha_01,11 = 0.74027, gamma_01,11 = 0.61175 and D2 alpha_02,12 = 0.61765, gamma_02,12 = 0.50224 (a.u.): from Tables 5-6 H2 J = 1 (1.1481, 0.53635) and D2 J = 2 (0.95248, 0.45024) exactly. shelton_1987’s Table 2 (notes only there) prints H2 12.21 and 10.09, D2 10.18 and 8.28 (10^-42 C2 m2 J^-1): the same numbers times 1.64878e-41.
