Source kind: measurement

Recorded technique: Evacuated Mach-Zehnder interferometer (Banfield et al. 1973) with a water-jacketed absorption cell (water within 1 K of ambient, measured to +-0.2 K). Fringes counted photoelectrically at 288.2 nm while the cell was filled to about 5 Torr above ambient, then at constant pressure while the wavelength was scanned to 221.7 nm, photographed for 165-245 nm, and counted again at 221.7 nm while the cell was evacuated; counts at Si I and H2 emission lines on the H2 continuum, drift corrected. Pressure by Baratron differential and a calibrated mercury barometer (+-0.2 Torr). Airco research-grade krypton, 99.995 %, analysed twice (Table 2). pp. 374-376.

Materials in structured entries: Kr

Dataset quantities: refractivity

The library’s DOI and title; page numbers are counted from 374 on the pdf.

SUPERSEDED: the same measurements, with ‘slight changes ... from an improved calculation of the drift correction’, are in smith_1976 (Phys. Rev. A 13, 1422, p. 1433 there), whose krypton values differ from these by up to 0.4e-6 (212.48 nm: 503.2 against 502.8). smith_1976/experiment_Kr is the one to fit; every dataset here is excluded or reproduced.

State: not stated in the paper; Table 3 is headed ‘(n - 1) [in 10^-6] for krypton’. The values agree with smith_1976’s (0 C, 760 Torr, real gas) to 0.4e-6 and with Leonard’s adjusted Kronjager and Koch values to 0.1 %, so they are recorded at 0 C and 1 atm, density unknown.

Uncertainty (p. 376, Table 1): the probable errors of the fringe count (+-0.06 %), pressure (0.03 %), length (0.02 %) and temperature (0.07 %) give ‘Total +-0.1%’; the abstract: ‘The probable error of each measurement is +-0.1%’. At least two measurements per wavelength; ‘the mean absolute difference between pairs of results was 0.1 x 10^-6 (0.02%)’. A gas sample collected during a run at 243.59 nm gave (479.0 +- 0.5)e-6 against the other results (479.2 +- 0.5)e-6 and (478.9 +- 0.5)e-6 (p. 376). Wavelengths are vacuum (‘lambda_vac’, Si I and H2 lines known to better than 0.01 %).

Conclusion (pp. 376-377): ‘On the average, our data are about 0.1% smaller than those of Kronjager and Koch as adjusted by Leonard’, and ‘about 3.8% smaller than those of Abjean et al.’, whose data ‘are incorrect’ (abjean_1971; withdrawn by its authors in bideau_mehu_1976). The three-term Sellmeier interpolation (‘calc.’) has no printed coefficients: no formula.

Reproductions elsewhere: bideau_mehu_1981/smith_1975_Kr and bideau_mehu_1976/smith_1975_Kr (values at the Brest wavelengths: bideau_mehu_1976’s 488.8 at 228.8 nm and 501.6 at 213.9 nm are this paper’s ‘calc.’ interpolation there).

Recorded bibliographic identity status: VALIDATED_WITH_WARNINGS. This concerns identification of the source; it does not establish the scientific correctness of its contents.
