THE DILUTE VISCOSITY (p. 23, Eq. 2; Tables I and II, p. 24, read from the library text): eta0(T) = 0.0266958 sqrt(M T) / (sigma^2 Omega(T*)), in uPa s, with M in g/mol, sigma in nm, T* = T/(epsilon/k), and Omega(T*) = exp(sum_{i=0}^{4} b_i (ln T*)^i), b = 0.431, -0.4623, 0.08406, 0.005341, -0.00331. Table I: nitrogen M = 28.01348, epsilon/k = 98.94 K, sigma = 0.3656 nm; argon 39.948, 143.2 K, 0.335 nm; oxygen 31.9988, 118.5 K, 0.3428 nm; air 28.9586, 103.3 K, 0.360 nm. The equations are ‘valid over all liquid and vapor states’ of each fluid’s equation of state (abstract, p. 21): optmat takes each equation of state’s temperatures. The dilute states are taken at about one atmosphere and the ideal gas at zero pressure is taken as ‘nearly identical’ to them (p. 22).

UNCERTAINTY (section 5, p. 57): ‘the uncertainties for viscosity are 0.5 % in the dilute gas for nitrogen and argon, 1% in the dilute gas for air and for oxygen at temperatures above 200 K, and 5% in the dilute gas for oxygen at lower temperatures’; no coverage factor stated. At high temperatures a second group of data lies systematically below the equations, by up to -14 % at 2500 K for nitrogen (p. 38, Fig. 17).

REPRODUCED: CoolProp 8.0.0’s viscosities of the three gases (reference key Lemmon-IJT-2004) at 1e-6 mol/m^3 equal Eq. (2) with these constants to 5e-11, 120-900 K (computed 2026-09-30).
