Source kind: measurement

Recorded technique: Absolute refractivity with an evacuated Michelson interferometer, He-Ne laser at 632.99 nm (two isotherms at the green Hg line), stainless-steel sample cell l(296.28 K) = 42.592(14) cm, 250-340 K and 0-3 MPa: the gas is pumped out in 12-35 pressure steps (pressure to 1.8e-4 of the transducer’s 3.5 MPa, temperature to 10 mK) while the fringes are counted (Eq. 1, pp. 118-119). The Lorentz-Lorenz function of the ideal-gas density is fitted by a recursive residual procedure (Eqs. 2-4), weighted (w_k = p_k) and unweighted. SF6 purity 99.9 %.

Curation notes#

Page numbers are the journal’s (117-130; pdf page 1 = p. 117). The library directory’s author field is garbled (‘H?usler’); the citation is the paper’s.

Reduction (Eqs. 2 and 5, pp. 119-120): LL* = (n^2 - 1)/(n^2 + 2)/rho_0 = sum_i A_i rho_0^(i-1), rho_0 = p/RT (R = 8.31432); A_1 = 4 pi N_A alpha_0/3 is the molar refractivity of the free molecule (zero density), so no state applies. B and C (Table I, second part) assume b_R = A_1/4 (Eq. 9) and c_R = 0 (Eq. 10): equation-of-state quantities, not extracted.

Uncertainty: ‘As usual, standard deviations Delta A_i of the corresponding last figures are given in parentheses’ (p. 121), 1 sigma of the fit. ‘The uncertainties of the unweighted data are always up to 10 times larger’ (p. 121); the pressure measurement at low density ‘limits the accuracy of measured polarizabilities’ (p. 118), and the scatter of A_1 hides any temperature dependence (p. 124).

Table I is split by the library into two tables (the second has lost its row labels; its rows follow the first’s order, checked on the image, pp. 122-123). Only A_1 is taken; the second part’s 10^24 alpha_0 (cm^3) is 3 A_1/(4 pi N_A).

Means (p. 124, text): ‘The averages of A_1 (633 nm) in cm^3 mol^-1 in Table I’: SF6 10.995(42) (w), 10.995(36) (uw), leaving out ‘the obvious bad value 10.8477 in Table I at 337 K’ (the uw mean also leaves out 337 K). Checked: the mean and sample standard deviation of the other five weighted values are 10.99518 and 0.0420; of the unweighted 10.99500 and 0.0365. Inline datasets A_1_mean_w_SF6 and A_1_mean_uw_SF6, use = ‘check’.

The authors compare with St-Arnaud and Bose’s 11.348(21) ([24], st_arnaud_1979, at 323 K): ‘The reason for the pronounced deviation in the case of SF6 is not yet clear. However, this deviation cannot be attributed only to the stated impurity of 0.1%’ (pp. 124-125). This paper’s mean is 3.1 % below St-Arnaud and Bose, and 2.9 % below optmat’s fit/SF6 at 632.99 nm (11.322 cm^3/mol, checked 2026-09-26): an outlier, a check only. The 546.22 nm isotherm (10.9680 w) is 0.25 % below the 633 nm mean, which the authors read as anomalous dispersion in the visible (p. 124); fit/SF6 has normal dispersion there (11.362 at 546.22 nm, +0.35 % over 633 nm), and the difference is within the scatter of the 633 nm isotherms (standard deviation 0.38 %). Their supporting argument, the higher static A_eps(323 K) = 16.478 cm^3/mol of Sutter ([17]; inline dataset A_eps_sutter_SF6), reflects SF6’s large vibrational polarizability, not optical dispersion.

Not extracted: C2H4 and C2H6 (not curated species; their means 10.567(38), 10.571(95) and 11.159(41), 11.163(43), against 10.610(9) [22] and 11.26 [3]); A_2-A_4, B and C of Table I; Table II (fits of C(T), Eq. 14); Figs. 1-4.
