Two-photon ionisation: source coverage and comparisons#

Start with Two-photon ionisation and absorption for the cross-section convention and model interface. This chapter describes the recorded evidence and its limits; source details are in the Source catalogue catalogue.

The curated two-photon ionisation cross sections#

Every curve read from a figure is use = "check" (data rule 8): those read from a vector drawing by their script, those read from a scanned image (raster) by theirs. The tables list every two-photon ionisation dataset of each gas, with the photon energies it covers inside the window \([I_p/2, E_1)\). The comparisons give the total cross section, the sum of the partials where a source draws only those, at photon energies off resonance. Each value is followed by its ratio to the first row.

The three calculations agree within about 15 % from threshold to 20 eV. Mihelič and Horvat’s own curves and Saenz and Lambropoulos’s differ the most near threshold; there Saenz’s scaled axis matters (TC-873, TC-874). Sato et al.’s FEL measurement (TC-876) has one point in the window, 2.6(6)×10⁻⁵² cm⁴ s at 61.4 nm (20.19 eV, 1e13 W cm⁻²), three times below the calculations. Its other points lie above \(E_1\), one on the 1s2p resonance. Sato’s LOPT column is Nikolopoulos and Lambropoulos’s D wave alone (their Fig. 3), not the S + D total (TC-875, TC-876). Van der Hart and Bingham’s R-matrix Floquet calculation at 1e13 W cm⁻² (TC-904), which Sato quotes, is 0.92 to 1.07 of Saenz’s. Bachau et al.’s and Proulx and Shakeshaft’s tables (TC-905, TC-906) lie above the window.

One calculation from a vector drawing, McKenna and van der Hart’s. The only independent one is Moccia, Rahman and Rizzo’s perturbative calculation (raster; TC-910). It is strongly gauge dependent: its velocity form is 0.62 to 0.14 of McKenna’s from 12 to 16 eV, its length form 0.19 to 0.02. McGuire’s is for circular polarisation, read from a scan with a piecewise axis.

The two all-electron calculations agree within 10 % from 8 to 11 eV: Petrov et al. with core polarisation (both gauges), and McKenna and van der Hart. Without core polarisation, Petrov et al.’s is 0.71 to 0.81 of it (TC-877). Starace and Jiang’s two transition-matrix approximations (raster) bracket them, 0.72 to 1.27 (TC-878). McGuire’s circular cross section is 1.2 to 1.9 times the linear calculations, more than his own ratio \(R\) allows (at most 3/2; TC-879).

Three effects together are therefore about ±10 % in argon below 11 eV:

  • independent calculation;

  • gauge;

  • core polarisation.

Without core polarisation, or in the simpler approximations, the spread is about ±30 %. The older many-body calculations, all raster, lie mostly below the two all-electron ones:

  • Pan, Gao and Starace (0.63 to 0.74; TC-908);

  • Moccia, Rahman and Rizzo (0.61 to 0.87; TC-910);

  • Fink and Johnson’s relativistic calculation (0.66 to 0.83; TC-912);

  • Pindzola and Kelly’s second order (0.94 to 1.02; TC-909).

No measured argon two-photon ionisation cross section was found. Xenakis et al. observed argon two-photon ionisation at 82.9 nm but measured no cross section (TC-911).

Krypton has no vector-drawn or tabulated two-photon ionisation cross section and no measurement. Its only curves are read from scans:

  • L’Huillier, Tang and Lambropoulos’s MQDT, between the thresholds and above ²P₁/₂;

  • Fink and Johnson’s relativistic calculation, linear and circular, from the ²P₁/₂ threshold (TC-912);

  • McGuire’s, circular polarisation.

Above ²P₁/₂ the MQDT and relativistic calculations differ by up to a factor of 6 at 8 eV. McGuire’s circular values are 2.7 to 4.7 times Fink and Johnson’s from 8 to 9.5 eV.

The data do not support a model of krypton.

Above the upper threshold the calculations disagree by factors of 2 to 4:

  • Lagutin et al.’s relativistic, correlated calculation (TC-880) begins at the ²P₁/₂ threshold (6.72 eV) and has nothing between the thresholds.

  • L’Huillier and Wendin’s RPAE and L’Huillier, Tang and Lambropoulos’s MQDT (raster) are 0.3 to 0.6 times it.

  • Fink and Johnson’s relativistic calculation (raster; TC-912) is 0.75 to 0.99 of it, and Lagutin et al. redraw it.

  • Gangopadhyay et al.’s MQDT Table I (TC-914) is 0.37 to 0.69 of it. Every later drawing of “Gangopadhyay et al.” is this table, above the ²P₁/₂ threshold.

  • Karamatskou and Santra’s TDCIS (TC-881) starts above the window, at 9 eV. There it is 20 to 200 times Lagutin et al.’s off resonance.

  • The only measurement, McCown et al.’s at 193 nm (4.1×10⁻⁵⁰ cm⁴ s; TC-884), lies between the thresholds, where only the raster MQDT curve and Santra and Greene’s single-threshold calculation reach. It is drawn by L’Huillier, Tang and Lambropoulos 1.39 times higher than its printed value, and by Lagutin et al. and L’Huillier and Wendin at it (TC-882, TC-883). Gangopadhyay et al.’s raster curve between the thresholds (TC-914) reads 0.11 of it at the line centre. Bischel et al.’s estimate and Hodges et al.’s lower limit at 193 nm, both with McCown’s definition, are 400 and 80 times below it (TC-917, TC-918).

Circular polarisation: in the window, Lagutin et al.’s circular cross section is 0.92 to 1.08 times their linear one; McGuire’s circular values are 2.8 to 4 times Lagutin’s linear ones.

See OEP 6 — Two-photon ionisation and absorption of the noble gases for the completed proposal and its phase reports.
