Recorded technique: Constrained dipole oscillator strength distributions (DOSDs) for Li, N, O, H2, N2, O2, NH3, H2O, NO and N2O: discrete oscillator strengths, photoabsorption and fast-electron inelastic scattering data (Sect. 2.A, per species), Henke-Elgin and Veigele cross sections at high energy, the normalized Stobbe formula above 40 keV; each molecular DOSD scaled region by region (weights = inverse data uncertainty, 20-40 regions) to satisfy the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn sum rule and two molar refractivities R(lambda_a), R(lambda_b) (Sect. 2.B, Table 2), molar densities from the virial equation with Dymond & Smith’s B(T). S_k = integral (E/2R)^k (df/dE) dE (Eq. [8]), atomic units.

Materials in structured entries: H2, N2, N2O, O2

Curation notes#

Identity: an unverified library record; the article is identified by its own printed line ‘Can. J. Phys., 55, 2080 (1977)’ (p. 2080) and is Margoliash & Meath’s (1978) Ref. 4. No DOI is recorded (none printed in the record). Page numbers: PDF page n is p. 2079 + n.

Table 3 (p. 2092) is extracted for the curated species H2, N2, O2 and N2O (Li, N, O, NH3, H2O and NO are skipped); L_k and I_k (mean excitation energies) have no quantity. STRUCTURAL: the library table lost the N2O column (the last of ten; image checked); the N2O values are read from the image in the extraction script. Check: Margoliash & Meath’s ten-term N2O pseudospectrum (margoliash_1978), constructed to reproduce these integer-k sums, gives them back to 0.001-0.022 % for k = 0 to -14 (the same for H2, N2, O2: at most 0.05 %, the four printed figures), confirming both the image reading and the library’s H2, N2, O2 cells (computed 2026-09-25). The library also misreads Li’s S_-4 as 3.504(3) for the printed 3.504(4) (Li not extracted).

Constraints (Table 2, p. 2091, sources of the refractivity data, ‘[wavelengths]’ the two constraining values): H2 Koch (1909, 1912) renormalized to Newell & Baird (1965), Kirn (1921), Smith et al. (1976) [0.263, 0.168 um]; N2 Peck & Khanna (1966) [0.979 um], Koch (1913) renormalized to Peck & Khanna [0.258 um], Abjean et al. (1970), Wilkinson (1960); O2 Stoll (1922), Ladenburg & Wolfsohn (1932) [0.590 um], Smith et al. (1976) [0.252 um]; N2O Watson & Ramaswamy (1936) [0.546 um], Cuthbertson & Cuthbertson (1913), Koch (1924) renormalized to Watson & Ramaswamy [0.258 um]. The maximum deviations between the DOSD refractivities and these data are 0.003-0.7 % (3 % for Wilkinson’s N2), ‘generally less than a few tenths of a percent’. Hence the S_k (k < 0) are NOT independent of those refractivity data (smith_1976, peck_1966 and newell_1965 are curated; wilkinson_1960 and watson_1936 are being curated): use = check, as for kumar_2010 (TC-72).

Uncertainty (pp. 2093-2094): for k > 0 ‘several percent’ (the high-energy data); for k <= 0, the differences between the adopted and alternative DOSDs (Table 5, N2 and O2; ‘representative of the analogous results obtained for all the other molecules’) are ‘reasonable estimates of the magnitude of the uncertainties’ ... ‘based on the assumption that the refractivity data used to constrain the molecular DOSDs are reliable’. They are quoted in the N2 and O2 dataset notes (S_-2 0.0 % by construction) but not stored as uncertainties (none stated for k > 0 beyond ‘several percent’, none for H2 and N2O). Table 5’s own alternative S_k are not extracted.

Not extracted: Table 1 (O atom lines), Table 2 (as notes above), Table 4 (the unconstrained initial sums), Tables 6-9 (S_2, S_1, S_-1, S_-3, I_2, I_-1 compared with other work: for H2 ‘exact’ wave-function S_-1 = 3.0974 (Kolos-Wolniewicz), CI 3.1176, empirical DOSDs 3.102 (Gerhart 1975) and 3.135 (Victor & Dalgarno); S_-3 10.12 (Victor & Dalgarno) and N2 17.84 (Dalgarno et al. 1967); odd and positive k, not refractive). The DOSDs themselves are in an Appendix deposited with CISTI (not in the library).

Recorded bibliographic identity status: VALIDATED_WITH_WARNINGS. This concerns identification of the source; it does not establish the scientific correctness of its contents.
