Source kind: theory
Recorded technique: A proposed method, tested only by numerical experiments: n2 from the self-phase-modulation broadening of a pulse in a gas-filled hollow-core fiber (Ar, 40 fs, 800 nm, 250 um, 50-1000 mbar), and for molecules (N2) n2,instant from few-cycle (5.3 fs) pulses plus the rotational constant and spin statistics from pump-probe spectral shifts, simulated with a nonlinear Schroedinger equation (Kerr, self-steepening, PPT ionization, plasma, rotational density matrix) whose inputs are the ‘true values’ of Table 2 (pp. 2239-2243). No measurement.
Materials in structured entries: N2

Journal pages 2238-2245 = PDF pages 1-8. Identity checked against the first page.
NO MEASURED VALUE. The ‘retrieved’ n2 are outputs of simulations run with known inputs: Ar in um2/(TW bar) in Figs. 1-2 only; N2 n2,instant retrieved with a 20-cm fiber ‘5.3834 +- 0.6277 um2/(TW bar)’ (800 nm) and ‘5.7077 +- 0.5510’ (400 nm) against the inputs 5.5 and 6.0 (p. 2242); B0 retrieved 1.984844 cm^-1 against 1.989581 (p. 2243). Not extracted (simulation outputs).
DEFINITIONS (p. 2239): Eq. (1) dE/dz = -(alpha/2) E + i (omega0/c) n2 |E|^2 E, E normalized to intensity (so n2 is the self coefficient), gamma = omega0 n2 / (c A_eff); Eq. (5): n2 bar = n2 per unit gas pressure (‘nonlinear refractive index per unit gas pressure’); p. 2242: Delta n_rot-Raman = (2 pi rho_nt Delta alpha / n0)(<<cos^2 theta>> - 1/3).
TABLE 2 (p. 2242; image checked; tools/extract/wang_2015.py): the N2 inputs. n2,instant at 800 nm = 5.5 um2/(TW bar), note a: ‘As it is the instantaneous part of n2, the value is half that in [23]’ ([23] = Loriot et al.’s erratum, Opt. Express 18, 3011 (2010), N2 11 x 10^-20 cm2/W at 1 bar). That erratum already gives the self coefficient (the factor 2 of the degenerate probe removed; wahlstrand_2013), so the halving is WRONG: ‘excluded’. n2,instant at 400 nm = 6.0, note b: ‘Derived according to generalized Miller formulas in [33]’ (Ettoumi et al. 2010 = ettoumi_2010) from the halved value: excluded with it. B0 = 1.989581 cm^-1, D0 = 5.76e-6 cm^-1, Delta alpha = 1.0 A^3, g_even = 2, g_odd = 1, note c = Ref. [29] (Herzberg, Molecular Spectra and Molecular Structure, 1989). Units: 1 um2/(TW bar) = 1e-20 cm2/W per bar.
Recorded bibliographic identity status: VALIDATED. This concerns identification of the source; it does not establish the scientific correctness of its contents.

Table 2, n2,instant of N2 used as the simulations’ input, in um2/(TW bar) = 1e-20 cm2/W per bar (293.15 K assumed): 800 nm = half of Loriot et al.’s erratum value (11), wrongly (the erratum value is already the self coefficient); 400 nm derived from it with the generalized Miller formulas. Excluded: an erroneous reproduction.
