Recorded technique: The molecular ADK (MO-ADK) tunnelling theory: the asymptotic valence orbital of a diatomic molecule is expanded about the molecular centre in spherical harmonics with coefficients C_l (Eqs. 1-2), and the static-field rate follows from Smirnov and Chibisov’s procedure (Eq. 7). The molecular C_l are fitted to valence orbitals from a self-consistent multiple-scattering (muffin-tin) calculation at fixed internuclear distance (refs. 20-22); the atomic C_l are from self-interaction-free density-functional theory (Tong and Chu, Phys. Rev. A 55, 3406 (1997), ref. 23). Single-active-electron, no many-electron effects (p. 2).

Curation notes#
Journal pages 033402-1 to -11 = PDF pages 1-11. The founding paper of MO-ADK; solprop’s moadk_tong2002 parameters (N2, H2/D2, O2) are its Table I.
EXTRACTED. Table I (p. 3; cells file only, image checked): I_p, R and C_l of the valence orbital of H2+ (sigma_g), the hydrogen molecule printed ‘D_2 (sigma_g)’, N2 (sigma_g), O2 (pi_g) and CO (sigma); F2, S2 (pi_g), NO and SO (pi) are not curated species and are not taken (F2 15.70 eV, 1.412 A, C_2 1.17, C_4 0.13; S2 9.36 eV; NO 9.26 eV; SO 10.29 eV, whose C_2 is printed negative, -0.31). Table II (p. 3): I_p, C_l and C_l(ADK) of He (1s), Ne (2p), Ar (3p), Kr (4p) and Xe (5p).
THE HYDROGEN ROW. Table I labels it D_2 (I_p 15.47 eV, R 0.742 A); the paper applies it to D2 throughout (the D2:Ar comparison, Figs. 4-6) and uses the same C_l for H2 in Fig. 2 (‘the MO-ADK rate for H2 obtained from the present model’, p. 5). A fixed-nuclei orbital at a given R does not depend on the nuclear masses, so the coefficients serve both isotopes at that R; the I_p printed is for the row as labelled. Recorded as material D2, as printed; solprop uses the row for H2 and D2 alike (TC-439). zhao_2010 relabels the row ‘D_2/H_2’.
THE IONISATION ENERGIES ARE NOT VERTICAL. Table I’s caption says only ‘the ionization energy’. The text says, for D2:Ar (p. 6), ‘Note that the ionization potential we used here is the vertical transition energy, which is about 0.88 eV larger than the value listed in Table I’, and for O2:Xe (p. 7) ‘the vertical transition energy that is about 0.33 eV larger than the value listed in Table I for O2’; p. 5: ‘the ionization energy is taken to be the vertical ionization energy, which is a function of internuclear separation’, computed as Hartree-Fock total-energy differences (ref. 28, p. 8). So Table I’s values are not the vertical energies the rates used for D2 and O2, and the paper does not say what they are or where they come from: kind = ‘not stated’. H2+’s 29.99 eV at R = 1.058 A (2.0 a0) is the fixed-nuclei binding energy of its one electron (zhao_2010 Table VI prints 1.1026 hartree as ‘exact’). The atomic I_p of Table II are to the ion’s ground state (adiabatic and vertical coincide for an atom); their source is not stated. All I_p are ‘check’. Table II prints He’s I_p as 23.59 eV, a misprint for 24.59 (erratum below).
THE COEFFICIENTS. Eq. (1), p. 2: Psi^m(r) = sum_l C_l F_l(r) Y_lm(r^), ‘with m being the magnetic quantum number along the molecular axis’; Eq. (2): ‘We normalize the coefficient C_l in such a way that the wave function in the asymptotic region can be expressed as F_l(r -> inf) ~ r^(Z_c/kappa - 1) e^(-kappa r)’, Z_c the effective Coulomb charge, kappa = sqrt(2 I_p), I_p ‘the ionization potential for the given valence orbital’; atomic units. Eqs. (3)-(4), p. 2-3: along the field, Y_lm ~ Q(l,m) sin^|m| theta e^(i m phi) / (2^|m| |m|! sqrt(2 pi)), Q(l,m) = (-1)^m sqrt((2l+1)(l+|m|)!/(2(l-|m|)!)). The m of each orbital (p. 4): ‘For sigma orbitals, m = 0; for pi orbital, m = 1’ (m taken positive), and for atoms ‘We have set m = 0 for the ionization of atoms since higher values of m contribute little’. Stated accuracy (p. 8): ‘the major error in the MO-ADK model comes from the calculation of the coefficients C_l’s in Table I, which are estimated to have an error at the 20% level’ (recorded as the uncertainty of the molecular C_l, level not stated). The atomic C_l (p. 3): ‘we did not use the coefficient C_l from the ADK model. We use the actual value calculated based on the self-interaction free density-functional theory for atoms ... Note that our definition of the ADK coefficients is somewhat different.’ The paper gives no formula for its C_l(ADK) row, and it does not follow from Ammosov et al.’s Eq. (19) or its Hartree form (without the 1/n*) converted to Eq. (2)’s normalisation, C_l = C_n*l* kappa^(n* + 1/2): those give He 2.92 or 2.54, Ne 2.78 or 2.47, Ar 2.25 or 2.17, Kr 2.05 or 2.04, Xe 1.80 or 1.85 against the printed 2.67, 2.52, 2.19, 2.04, 1.86 (computed 2026-09-26 with Table II’s I_p). Not reproduced.
THE RATE (p. 3-4). Static field, molecule along the field, Eq. (7): w_stat(F, 0) = B^2(m)/(2^|m| |m|!) kappa^-(2Z_c/kappa - 1) (2 kappa^3/F)^(2Z_c/kappa - |m| - 1) exp(-2 kappa^3/3F), with Eq. (6) B(m) = sum_l C_l Q(l, m); ‘Note that in Eq. (7) we have corrected the error in the coefficients in Ref. 16’ (Smirnov and Chibisov). At Euler angles R between the molecular axis and the field, Eq. (8) B(m’) = sum_l C_l D^l_m’,m(R) Q(l, m’) and Eq. (9) w_stat(F, R) = sum_m’ [Eq. (7) with m’]. Low-frequency ac field, Eq. (10): w(F, R) = (3F/(pi kappa^3))^(1/2) w_stat(F, R), F the peak field. Randomly oriented molecules: the signal of Eq. (16) (Gaussian beam, P = 1 - exp(-int w dt), Eq. (15)) integrated over R, Eq. (17). The rates are per orbital (one active electron); the paper applies no occupation factor, and says the MO-ADK theory ‘does not account for the many-electron effect’ (p. 2). Vibrational folding Eq. (18) (harmonic ground state) changes little.
TABLE III (p. 4, notes only): ratios of single-ionisation rates molecule:companion atom, A_1 (Eq. 12, the structure factor), A_2 (Eq. 13), A_3 (Eq. 14) and R (Eq. 11), at 1e14 W/cm^2: D2:Ar 0.31, 0.88, 0.42, 0.14; O2:Xe 0.38, 0.03, 0.74, 0.01; N2:Ar 0.84, 1.04, 1.31, 1.15; CO:Kr 0.33, 1.00, 0.98, 0.32; F2:Ar, S2:Xe, SO:Xe, NO:Xe (and the last three at 2e13 W/cm^2) not curated. Model outputs, not a quantity. The text (p. 8) quotes N2:Ar 0.98 at 1e14 W/cm^2 where the table’s R is 1.15.
FIGURES (not digitised): Fig. 1 H2+ static rate against F (complex rotation vs MO-ADK; they part at F = 0.2 au); Fig. 2 H2 rate against intensity with Saenz’s ab initio values (ref. 25); Fig. 3 aligned:random rate ratios for N2 and O2; Figs. 4, 6-10 ratios of ionisation signals D2:Ar, O2:Xe, N2:Ar, F2:Ar, CO:Kr against peak intensity (25 fs Gaussian pulses in the calculations) with the measurements of Wells et al., DeWitt et al., Talebpour et al. and Guo et al.; Fig. 5 Hartree-Fock potential curves of D2 and D2+.
