Recorded technique: One-colour two-photon excitation of Ar 2p1, 2p5, 2p6 and 2p8 (Paschen) from the ground state by VUV pulses at 184.0, 186.8, 188.3 and 189.4 nm (Table I): the seventh (2p1) or sixth stimulated anti-Stokes Raman order of an excimer-pumped dye laser (349.7-395.7 nm, 30 mJ, 0.3 cm-1) in 0.7 bar of hydrogen at 77 K, 1-10 uJ in 5 ns FWHM, ‘an intensity of 10^7-10^8 W cm-2’ at the focus of an f = 11 cm LiF lens; the 4p population rose as the square of the pulse energy. Static stainless-steel cell, 0.5 mbar of argon plus the reagent gas (F2, Cl2 and NO2 as 5 %, 2 % and 2 % mixtures in He, the He quenching subtracted); fluorescence on the 750.4, 751.5, 763.5 and 842.5 + 801.5 nm lines through interference or high-pass filters onto a photomultiplier, 25-50 shots averaged on a 2 GS/s oscilloscope, single-exponential fits after the first 20-25 ns. Total quenching rate constants from the slopes of Stern-Volmer plots, 1/tau_d = 1/tau_0 + k_Ar [Ar] + k_Q [Q] (Eq. 1), at room temperature; radiative lifetimes from the zero-pressure intercepts.

J. Chem. Phys. 115(7), 3144-3154 (15 August 2001) = PDF pages 2-12 (PDF page 1 is the AIP download cover; journal page = PDF page + 3142). Identity checked on the first page of the article (PDF p. 2: title, authors, Grenoble and Essen, received 22 January 2001, accepted 5 June 2001; running head J. Chem. Phys., Vol. 115, No. 7, 15 August 2001) on 2026-10-12. Tables I-III checked cell by cell against the table images and the rendered pages (pp. 3146, 3148, 3150).
EXCITATION (OEP 8). The four levels are the J = 0 and J = 2 levels of Ar 3p5 4p that one-colour two-photon absorption reaches from the ground state; the excitation is two-photon (‘selectively prepared by two-photon excitation from the ground state using VUV (184-190 nm range) laser pulses’, abstract; population quadratic in the pulse energy, p. 3145), at 184.0 nm (2p1), 186.8 (2p5), 188.3 (2p6) and 189.4 nm (2p8), vacuum wavelengths: 2 / lambda_VUV gives Table I’s energies within the 0.1 nm rounding (script check). These are OEP 8’s argon levels and its 185-195 nm drive. The paper notes that the two-photon cross sections of Ar are smaller than those of Xe, which with 1e7-1e8 W/cm2 avoided amplified spontaneous emission (p. 3145).
LEVELS. The paper’s Paschen labels with its jK and LS names (pp. 3144-3145) and NIST’s (src/optmat/data/external/nist_asd/Ar_I_levels.tsv): 2p1 = 4p’[1/2]0 (1S0) = 3s2.3p5.(2P*<1/2>).4p 2[1/2] J = 0, 108722.6194 cm-1; 2p5 = 4p[1/2]0 (3P0) = (2P*<3/2>).4p 2[1/2] J = 0, 107054.2720; 2p6 = 4p[3/2]2 (1D2) = (2P*<3/2>).4p 2[3/2] J = 2, 106237.5518; 2p8 = 4p[5/2]2 (3D2) = (2P*<3/2>).4p 2[5/2] J = 2, 105617.2700. Evidence: Table I’s energies, 108 722, 107 054, 106 237 and 105 617 cm-1, equal NIST’s within 1 cm-1 (script check), and its fluorescence lines 750.4, 751.5, 763.5, 842.5 and 801.5 nm are NIST’s 2p1, 2p5, 2p6 and 2p8 lines to 4s. DOUBT (a misprint in a label, no value affected): Table I prints ‘4p[1/2]0’ for all of 2p5, 2p6 and 2p8; the title, abstract and text name 2p6 and 2p8 4p[3/2]2 and 4p[5/2]2, and the energies are those levels’.
TAKEN (collisional_quenching_rate_coefficient and radiative_lifetime, TC-1011; script tools/extract/sadeghi_2001.py for the tables, inline points for the text): - Tables II (p. 3148) and III (p. 3150), the k_Q columns, 10^-10 cm3 s-1: the total quenching of the four levels by each of the 22 gases, one dataset per gas (kq_<gas>; argon itself is perturber self, kq_self), order 2, channel total, rows 2p1, 2p5, 2p6, 2p8. 23 datasets: Kr’s 2p6 has two values (kq_Kr and kq_Kr_full, below). 0.0021 (2p1 + Ne) to 23 (2p5 + NO2). Uncertainties as the footnotes give them: 10 % unless noted, 30 % for footnote d (Table II: He 2p1 and 2p8, all of Ne, Kr 2p6 and 2p8; Table III: all of NO2), 20 % for Table III’s f (Cl2 2p5, 2p6, 2p8). ‘Least-square uncertainties’ (p. 3146); no confidence level stated. Room temperature, not given as a number (300 K is used in an energy argument, p. 3147): no temperature_k. - Footnote c (lower limits): 2p5 in Ar (the 750 nm filter may pass 2p6’s line; ‘it should be close to the total quenching constant’, p. 3147), kept in kq_self; Kr 2p6, 0.47 (c, d; the fit to all of Fig. 5’s data), kept apart as kq_Kr_full (use check); the Kr row’s 2p6 is the second line, 0.75 (d, f), the fit at low Kr pressure the text prefers (p. 3148). Footnote e: the 2p8 rates in He, Ne and Ar are the sum of the quenching of the coupled 2p8 + 2p9 pair to other states (both emit through the filter; Ar transfers 2p8 to 2p9 at 0.18e-10 cm3/s, refs. 9, 10) and ‘may be lower limits’ (p. 3147). 2p1 in Ar excludes the transfer to 2p5 (the filter passes it). - Text p. 3147, radiative lifetimes, inline points (tau_Ar, primary): ‘average radiative lifetimes of 24 +- 2, 24 +- 2, 28 +- 3, and 29 +- 3 for 2p1, 2p5, 2p6, and 2p8’ from the low-pressure limits of the 22 Stern-Volmer plots of each level. No unit is printed with them; it is ns: the radiative decay rates printed on the same page, (4.2 +- 0.3), (4.2 +- 0.3), (3.6 +- 0.4) and (3.4 +- 0.4) x 10^7 s-1, are their inverses to the printed figures (script check). The rates are the same measurement and are not taken again. The lifetimes ‘differ slightly’ from the authors’ earlier ones (ref. 33, Francis et al., Eur. Phys. J. Appl. Phys. 4, 239 (1998), not in the library). - Not taken: the sigma_Q columns (k_Q / <v>, derived); Table III’s last column, Ref. 1’s averages for Ar(4s[3/2]2) and Ar(4s’[1/2]0) and an estimate for NO2 (another paper’s values for other levels); Table I’s wavelengths (experimental settings); the Stern-Volmer figures (Figs. 4-8), whose slopes are the tables’ values; the text’s quotations of refs. 9-11 (0.29 +- 0.14, 0.22, <= 0.2, 0.11, <= 0.18 and 0.47 +- 0.07 x 10^-10, Ar quenching of 2p1, 2p5, 2p6, 2p8, other papers).
FINDING (radiative lifetimes against wiese_1989, TC-1012, and NIST, TC-985). NIST’s 1/sum A over the lines from each level (Ar_I_lines_nir.tsv; every line with an A): 2p1 22.1 ns (2 lines), 2p5 25.0 (1), 2p6 29.07 (3), 2p8 30.99 (3); wiese_1989’s radiative widths give 22.35, 24.88, 29.04 and 31.01 ns (its notes). The measured 24 +- 2, 24 +- 2, 28 +- 3 and 29 +- 3 ns agree with both within the stated errors (2p1 1.0 error long, 2p5 0.5 short, 2p6 and 2p8 within 0.7). This is an independent measurement (time-resolved decay of two-photon excited atoms); wiese_1989’s A values are scaled to other lifetimes (Quadfasel and Helbig’s), and NIST’s A values for these lines are wiese_1989’s, so NIST is not independent of wiese_1989.
DOUBTS (printed inconsistencies; no value corrected). Table II’s footnote b prints the unit as ‘10^-10 cm^-3 s^-1’ and the uncertainties as ‘+10%’ and (d) ‘+30%’ (Table III and the text: cm3 s-1, +-10 %, +-30 %). Table II’s footnote f says 0.75 was ‘deduced from the Stern-Volmer plot of full data’, but the text (p. 3148) says the fit to all of the data gives the smaller value and the low-pressure fit ‘an approximately twofold larger’ one, and footnote c marks 0.47 as the lower limit, so f describes 0.47 and 0.75 is the low-pressure fit; the text’s low-pressure range is ‘below 25 mbar’, Fig. 5’s caption ‘below 15 mbar’. The text (p. 3149) gives Cl2 +-30 %, Table III’s footnote f +-20 % (2p5, 2p6, 2p8) and no mark (10 %) for Cl2 2p1: the table’s are recorded.
BEARING ON OEP 8 (for scale, not data): quenching depopulates the level and is not the pure dephasing. In pure argon at 296 K (2.45e19 cm-3 per bar) the self-quenching rates are 3.9e8 (2p1), 2.9e8 (2p5), 3.2e8 (2p6) and 5.9e8 s-1 (2p8) per bar, 7-17 times the radiative rates: at 1 bar the 4p levels live 1.6-3.0 ns, and the corresponding Lorentzian FWHM is 46-94 MHz per bar (k [Ar] / 2 pi). Molecular impurities quench at 1e-10 to 1e-9 cm3/s: 10 ppm of O2 in 1 bar of Ar adds 1.8e5 s-1 (2p5), negligible.

Table II (p. 3148), k_Q in 10^-10 cm3/s, quenching of Ar 2p1, 2p5, 2p6, 2p8 by argon (self) at room temperature. Quenching by argon itself (the slopes of Fig. 4, Ar to 180 mbar, strictly single-exponential decays). 2p5 is footnoted c, a lower limit (the 750 nm filter may pass 2p6’s 763.5 nm line), ‘but it should be close to the total quenching constant’; 2p1 does not include the transfer to 2p5 (which the filter passes), ‘a lower limit ... expected to be close to the total’ (text 0.16 +- 0.02); 2p8 is footnoted e, the sum of the quenching of the coupled 2p8 + 2p9 pair to other states (Ar transfers 2p8 to 2p9 at 0.18e-10, refs. 9, 10), and 2p6, 0.13, ‘a reliable total quenching constant’ (p. 3147). Reconciled with chang_1978 and nguyen_1978 (TC-1074): the 2p5 total is about 1.9 times this table’s 0.12 (Nguyen’s transfers sum to 0.225), and the 2p8 total is about twice it (0.24 plus the 2p8-to-2p9 transfer 0.18 gives 0.42, inside Chang’s 0.47 +- 0.07); 2p6 is consistent; 2p1 is not measured elsewhere.
