Curation notes#

Working equation (Eqs. (1)-(5)): (n^2 - 1)/(n^2 + 2) = sum_i A_i (p/(N_A k_B T))^i with A_1 = A_eps + A_mu (zero-density molar electric polarizability plus molar magnetic susceptibility); for optical RIGM A_R replaces A_eps + A_mu, B_R replaces B_eps and C_R replaces C_eps, ‘understood to be at the frequency of the measuring laser’, 632.9908 nm for the tabulated optical values (p. 4, Table 3 note a). A_R therefore INCLUDES the magnetic A_mu; the static A_eps does not. 632.9908 nm is taken as the vacuum wavelength of the He-Ne laser (the paper does not say; the air wavelength of that line would be near 632.8 nm). ‘All uncertainties in the present work have been converted to standard uncertainties (k = 1)’ (p. 4). Page numbers are the library pdf pages (pdf page 1 is the publisher’s cover; the article page is one less).

Datasets: the Table 3 rows with a number in a curated quantity. The recommended values are other authors’ (reproduced) except the helium A_R, which Rourke assembles (check). The table also recommends, without a quantity here (FORMAT NEED: a molar magnetic susceptibility A_mu = 4 pi chi_0/3, and third virial coefficients C_eps, C_R): A_mu He -7.921(4) x 10^-6 (Bruch and Weinhold, relativistic treatment), Ne -3.1713(71) x 10^-5 (Lesiuk et al. 2020, i.e. lesiuk_2020’s chi_0), Ar -8.09(57) x 10^-5 cm^3/mol (Barter et al., uncertainty raised by Rourke to 7 %, p. 13); C_R Ar -85.4(20) cm^9/mol^3 at 303 K (Achtermann et al. 1993), N2 -89(10) cm^9/mol^3 at 302.919 K (Achtermann et al. via Egan et al. 2016); C_eps fits He (7.69744e-3 T - 3.00555) (0.22), Ne (5.32572e-3 T - 5.21418) (0.69), Ar (0.224542 T - 139.502) (20) cm^9/mol^3 (the present work’s weighted straight lines through Table 4); D_eps He -2.3(15), Ne 3.5(77), Ar 140(190) cm^12/mol^4 at 298 K. The text adds C_R Ar -86.6(20) at 323 K (Achtermann et al. 1991) and -79(10) at 298 K (Coulon et al. 1981), N2 -85(10) at 298 K (Montixi et al. 1983) (p. 15). B_eps, B_R of He, Ne, Ar are pointers to the supplementary files of Garberoglio and Harvey (2020) and Hellmann et al. (2021), not in the library (B_R ‘listed without uncertainties’).

Text values extracted inline: neon A_R derived by Rourke from Lesiuk et al.’s dispersion coefficients, Gaiser and Fellmuth’s A_eps and Lesiuk et al.’s chi_0: 1.000249(14) cm^3/mol at 632.9908 nm, 38 ppm above Egan et al.’s measurement, ‘outside the combined standard uncertainties’, and 0.9956018(34) at 1550 nm (p. 13); Egan et al.’s (2016) nitrogen A_R 4.446139(16) cm^3/mol at 302.919 K, not recommended because it is traceable to a mercury manometer (p. 13). The helium A_R retardation correction of Pachucki and Puchalski, -0.140 ppm at 633 nm, has no uncertainty (p. 13).

Not extracted: Table 1 (data needs), Table 2 (copper heat-capacity coefficients), Table 4 (C_eps compilation), Tables 5-6 (B_rho of He, Ne, Ar, N2 and its budgets): no refractive quantity.

Recorded bibliographic identity status: VALIDATED. This concerns identification of the source; it does not establish the scientific correctness of its contents.
