Source kind: theory
Recorded technique: Calculated one-photon photoionisation cross sections of the Xe 5p5 2P3/2 6p (J = 0) level near threshold, in the dipole approximation, in two frozen-core models: nonrelativistic Hartree-Fock (Froese Fischer’s MCHF code for the Xe+ 5p5 2P core, a 6p orbital for the 2P 6p 1S and 3P terms, continuum orbitals by a noniterative exchange method; the jjJM amplitudes transformed to LS coupling, Eqs. 3-7) and relativistic Dirac-Fock (Desclaux’s MCDF code for the Xe+ 5p5 2P3/2 core, continuum by an iterative exchange method, Eqs. 8-14), each in the length (Eqs. 1, 8) and velocity (Eqs. 2, 9) forms. Final channels 2P3/2 es, ed-bar and ed (J = 1), summed for the total. No correlation beyond the frozen core.

Phys. Rev. A 23(1), 201-205 (January 1981) = PDF pages 1-5 (journal page = PDF page + 200); a scan with a text layer. Identity checked against the first page (journal, volume, number, date, title, author). Every number taken was checked against the table images and the rendered page (Table I, p. 204).
LEVEL. ‘2P3/2 6p(J = 0) state which is accessible by two-photon excitation of the ground state’ (p. 201): in Racah notation 6p[1/2]0, Paschen 2p5 (kroll_1990’s 2p5, 80 119 cm-1). ‘The experimental value for the threshold energy for photoionization is 2.1958 eV’ (p. 201, from Moore’s tables). 4.97 eV ‘is the energy needed for three-photon ionization of Xe I through an intermediate two-photon resonance with the 2P3/2 6p(J = 0) excited state’ (p. 204), i.e. 249.5 nm.
WHAT IS TAKEN (tools/extract/pindzola_1981.py). Table I (p. 204, ‘Xe 2P3/2 6p(J=0) photoionization cross sections (in cm2)’), all four parts: A, B and C, the partial cross sections into 2P3/2 es, ed-bar (j = 3/2) and ed (j = 5/2) (J = 1), and D, the total, each in four forms, Hartree-Fock length and velocity (HFL, HFV) and Dirac-Fock length and velocity (DFL, DFV), at 2.70, 3.20, 4.20, 4.97, 6.20, 10.20 and 18.20 eV photon energy. The entries print the power of ten as a superscript (note b). Row 2.70 eV of part A carries footnote marks on two values (1.367-18 b, the note on the powers of ten, and 1.283-18 a, the note naming the columns); they do not change the values. No uncertainty is stated. The paper prefers no form: ‘differences of 12% remain’ between HF and DF in the velocity form, 25 % in the length form, and ‘as much as 75%’ between the gauges, which ‘suggests that unincluded electron correlation effects may be important’ (p. 204). All datasets are therefore checks.
CHECKED (the script). The three partial cross sections add to the printed total within the rounding of the four numbers in 27 of the 28 cells (at most 1.0 unit of the total’s last figure). DOUBT: at 6.20 eV, DFV, the partials (6.922e-20, 4.974e-20, 7.549e-19) add to 8.7386e-19 against the printed 8.735e-19, 3.6 units where rounding allows 1.1 (0.04 %); every cell is as printed (images checked), so one of the four is a slip, which one cannot be told; nothing is corrected.
COMPARISONS. kroll_1990 (Table II, ref. 13) quotes this calculation for 2p5 as ranges ‘Hartree-Fock velocity to Dirac-Fock length’, 1.3-3.0 x 10^-18 cm2 at 248 nm and 0.7-1.8 at 193 nm: the 4.97 eV totals give HFV 1.321, DFL 3.049 (agrees); 193 nm (6.424 eV) lies between the 6.20 and 10.20 eV rows, where log-log interpolation gives HFV 0.71 and DFL 1.67 (the 6.20 eV row: 0.78, 1.85), so 0.7-1.8 mixes the two. chang_1982 (p. 2732) finds its Xe 6p cross section ‘higher than the Hartree-Fock calculation of Pindzola by a factor of two or more’ and cites this paper as ‘M. A. Pindzola, Phys. Rev. A 23, 20 (1981)’ (initial and page misprinted).
NOT TAKEN. Fig. 1 (p. 203), the four totals against photon energy from the threshold (2.1958 eV) to 15 eV, a raster scan: it draws Table I’s totals; only its stretch between the threshold and 2.70 eV, where the totals rise steeply, is not printed; it is not digitised.
Recorded bibliographic identity status: VALIDATED. This concerns identification of the source; it does not establish the scientific correctness of its contents.
