Recorded technique: A zero-dimensional kinetics model of the plasma a focused femtosecond pulse leaves in nitrogen (femtosecond laser electronic excitation tagging, FLEET): 54 reactions (Table I) among ten species, electron-impact rates from BOLSIG+ (version 03/2016) with its standard N2 cross sections, fast gas heating, and an electron energy balance; initial N2+ and electron densities from a PPT ionisation rate at a filament-clamped intensity (6.5 x 10^17 W m^-2, n_e = 7.2 x 10^16 cm^-3 at 300 K and 101.3 kPa). Seven uncertain coefficients tuned by a random search (240 000 trials) to the time-resolved first- and second-positive emission measured with a photomultiplier in a nitrogen free jet (800 nm, 70 fs, 0.5 mJ, f = 0.3 m; pp. 243301-2 to -9).

Curation notes#

Identity checked on the article’s first page (PDF page 2 = p. 243301-1; PDF page 1 is a cover sheet): Peters, Shneider and Miles, J. Appl. Phys. 125, 243301 (2019). PDF page n = p. 243301-(n - 1).

Curated: the one dissociative recombination of a registered ion in Table I, R12, e- + N2+ -> 2N, not tuned and taken from refs. 23 (kossyi_1992) and 40 (Popov 2001): the same value and law as kossyi_1992/dr_N2+_N_N.

TUNED, NOT A PROPERTY (notes only; Table I footnote a, Table IV, Sec. III A, p. 243301-8): the cluster-ion recombinations R7-R9, e- + N4+ -> N2(A, B, C) + N2, ‘2.5 %, 87 % and 11 % x 2.4 x 10^-6 sqrt(300/T_e)’ cm^3 s^-1: a base coefficient drawn from 2.6 x 10^-7 to 5.5 x 10^-6 and split at random among the three product states, chosen to fit the emission; also tuned: R5 (energy pooling), R23-R25 (quenching). Table IV lists the literature ranges, e.g. 2.6 x 10^-7 (ref. 34) to 4.6 +- 0.9 x 10^-6 (ref. 37) for N4+. Not registered, notes only: R11, e- + N3+ -> N + N2, 2.0 x 10^-7 sqrt(300/T_e) (refs. 23, 37); R10, 2e- + N4+, 7 x 10^-20 (300/T_e)^4.5 cm^6 s^-1. The model neglects e- + N4+ -> 2N2 in its ground state (p. 243301-2). Other reactions: notes only (plasma kinetics is outside optmat’s scope except as data; TC-954).

The initial conditions are model assumptions: only N2, N2+ and electrons at the end of the pulse (‘photoionization rather than photodissociation dominates’, p. 243301-7), and T_e(t0) = 35 300 K from two photons in excess of the 11-photon threshold, chosen ‘to provide better agreement with experimental results’.

Register: TC-977.

Recorded bibliographic identity status: VALIDATED. This concerns identification of the source; it does not establish the scientific correctness of its contents.
