Source kind: measurement
Recorded technique: Pulsed-discharge afterglow (dc or rf, ~100 Hz, ~100 us pulses, some mA) in 0.2-1 Torr of research-grade argon at room temperature, cylindrical cell 7 cm x 30 cm; one Ar 3p5 4p level (Paschen 2p_i) populated from the 3P2 metastable (2p5 from the long-lived 3P1) by a krypton-ion-pumped cw dye laser (0.03 Angstrom with an etalon, ~100 mW, chopped so that alternate afterglows are pumped). The fluorescence of the excited level and the sensitized fluorescence of the collisionally populated levels (Table I’s lines) recorded simultaneously by two 0.6 m monochromators with photon counting, one calibrated with a tungsten-ribbon lamp; steady-state population ratios N_i / N_j against 1 / [Ar] (Eq. 5): the slope gives k_ij with the radiative decay rate of level j from Wiese, Smith and Miles (1969); the intercept (k_j) could not be determined. Metastable densities by optical absorption; laser polarisation varied without effect.

Phys. Rev. A 18(4), 1388-1395 (October 1978) = PDF pages 1-8 (no cover page; journal page = PDF page + 1387). Identity checked on the first page (PDF p. 1: running head PHYSICAL REVIEW A VOLUME 18, NUMBER 4 OCTOBER 1978, title, authors, Grenoble, received 5 May 1978, footer 1388) on 2026-10-12. Table II checked cell by cell against the table image and the rendered page (p. 1392).
LEVELS. Paschen 2p1-2p10 (Fig. 1, which also gives the Racah labels) are NIST’s 3s2.3p5.(2P*<1/2>).4p 2[1/2] J = 0 (2p1, 108722.62 cm-1), 2[1/2] J = 1 (2p2), 2[3/2] J = 2 (2p3), 2[3/2] J = 1 (2p4) and (2P*<3/2>).4p 2[1/2] J = 0 (2p5, 107054.27), 2[3/2] J = 2 (2p6), 2[3/2] J = 1 (2p7), 2[5/2] J = 2 (2p8), 2[5/2] J = 3 (2p9), 2[1/2] J = 1 (2p10, 104102.10) (chang_1978’s notes list every energy). Evidence: the pump and fluorescence lines of Table I (e.g. 7635.11 Angstrom 3P2-2p6, 8424.65 3P1-2p8, 8115.31 3P2-2p9, 9122.97 3P2-2p10) are NIST’s air wavelengths of those transitions; Table III’s detailed-balance ratios follow from these levels’ energies and 2J + 1 within 3 % (script check, Eq. 6 at 300 K); the text’s gap of ‘>= 1361 cm-1’ above 2p10 is NIST’s 2p9 - 2p10 = 1360.7 cm-1 (script).
TAKEN (collisional_quenching_rate_coefficient, TC-1011; extraction script tools/extract/nguyen_1978.py): Table II (p. 1392), all 28 k_ij in 10^-12 cm3 s-1, perturber self (ground-state Ar), order 2, temperature_k 300 (title; ‘T = 300 K’ in N_0 = p_0 / kT, p. 1391), one dataset per product level j (k_to_2p3 ... k_to_2p10, channel = the product), rows the initial level i, 0.3 (2p3 -> 2p5, 2p8 -> 2p6) to 44 (2p3 -> 2p6). The cells left of the diagonal (i > j) are measured endothermic transfers, not detailed-balance values (p. 1394). ‘Their determination was achieved with an uncertainty better than 20%’, at least half from the transition probabilities used (p. 1394): relative 0.2, level not stated. Not measured: 2p1 and 2p10 as initial levels (‘The laser excitation of the 2p1 and 2p10 levels was not possible’, p. 1391), k57 (too weak), and the totals k_j (the intercepts ‘were within the experimental error bars’, p. 1394). No transfer into 2p1 or 2p2 is listed. NOT TAKEN: Table III (k_ij / k_ji, experimental from Table II and theoretical from Eq. 6: derived; checked); Table I (lines used); Figs. 3-5 (signals, the Eq. 5 plot of 2p7 -> 2p8, 2p9); the text’s k3 = sum_j k3j = 0.76 x 10^-10 cm3 s-1 (p. 1395; the sum of Table II’s row, script check) and Catherinot’s k3 = 1.1 x 10^-10 (another paper).
FINDING (sadeghi_2001’s caveats, TC-1066; its kq_self in 10^-10 cm3/s: 2p1 0.16, 2p5 0.12, 2p6 0.13, 2p8 0.24). 2p1: not resolved; neither this paper nor chang_1978 has any 2p1 data (sadeghi_2001, p. 3147: ‘State-to-state data do not exist for the reaction of 2p1’), so the excluded 2p1 -> 2p5 channel remains unmeasured. 2p5: the transfers out of 2p5 sum to 1.7 + 11.3 + 9.5 = 22.5 x 10^-12 (to 2p4, 2p6, 2p8; sadeghi_2001 quotes 0.22 x 10^-10), 1.9 times sadeghi_2001’s total of 0.12, which is therefore a lower limit by a factor of about two, not ‘close to the total’; the largest channel, 2p5 -> 2p6 (11.3), is the one whose 763.5 nm emission the 750 nm filter may pass, and 0.12 + 0.113 = 0.23 matches the sum. The true total is at least 0.225 x 10^-10 (the 4s, 4s’ products are not measured here). 2p8: k89 = 18.2 x 10^-12 (sadeghi_2001 quotes 0.18 x 10^-10; chang_1978 1.7 x 10^-11) is 90 % of the transfers out of 2p8 (20.3); sadeghi_2001’s 0.24 (the 2p8 + 2p9 pair to other states) plus 0.182 is 0.42 x 10^-10, inside chang_1978’s total 0.47 +- 0.07: with the 2p9 channel added, the three papers agree, and the 2p8 total is about twice Sadeghi’s Table II value. 2p6: transfers 4.1 + 6 + 1 = 11.1 x 10^-12 (sadeghi_2001 quotes 0.11), against sadeghi_2001’s total 0.13 and chang_1978’s upper limit 0.18: consistent, the 4s, 4s’ channel at most ~0.02-0.07.
FINDING (chang_1978, the same process, one-photon LIF in a flowing afterglow). In 10^-11 cm3/s, this paper / Chang and Setser: k34 2.75 / 2.2, k36 4.4 / 4.1, k43 2.3 / 1.7 (theirs by detailed balance), k67 0.41 / 0.8, k68 0.6 / 0.8, k69 0.1 / 0.2, k78 1.43 / 1.6, k79 2.33 / not seen, k89 1.82 / 1.7, k98 0.68 / 0.6 (detailed balance), k9,10 0.51 / ‘> 1.8’ (a disagreement of more than a factor 3.5); the 2p3 sum, 0.76 x 10^-10, against Chang and Setser’s total k_Q 1.10 +- 0.12 x 10^-10, the difference their intermultiplet 0.47. Chang and Setser’s note added in proof quotes this paper’s preprint as k78 1.4, k79 2.3, k56 1.1, k58 0.9: Table II’s 14.3, 23.3, 11.3, 9.5 (10^-12), the last rounding to 1.0.
DOUBTS (printed inconsistencies; no taken value affected). Table III’s experimental ratios agree with Table II within the rounding of its cells (script); k68 / k86 = 21.3 against 6 / 0.3 = 20.0 requires k86 near 0.28, so Table II’s 0.3 is rounded. Table I lists the 2p9 row’s sensitized line as ‘8424.65 (3P1-2p9)’: 8424.65 Angstrom is 3P1-2p8, the product it heads; and 2p5’s fluorescence line as ‘7514.18’, the laser line being 7514.65 (NIST 751.465 nm air), one line printed twice. Neither table is taken.
BEARING ON OEP 8 (for scale). The J = 0 level 2p5 (4p[1/2]0) transfers to 2p6 and 2p8 (J = 2) at 1.1 and 0.95 x 10^-11 cm3/s per argon atom: at 1 bar (2.45e19 cm-3 at 296 K) about 2.8e8 and 2.3e8 s-1, so a two-photon excited J = 0 population feeds the J = 2 levels within nanoseconds. Transfer, not pure dephasing.
