Source kind: theory

Recorded technique: Coupled-cluster theory with the d-aug-cc-pVTZ basis (chosen against aug- and t-aug-cc-pVTZ, Table I). Electronic contributions: analytical CCSD linear, quadratic and cubic response (DALTON; orbital-unrelaxed) at omega = 0, 0.0239, 0.0428 and 0.0656 hartree, at the CCSD-optimised geometry (R = 1.249 A, 117.7 deg) and at the experimental geometry (R = 1.272 A, 116.8 deg); static CCSD and CCSD(T) by finite fields (orbital-relaxed) at the experimental geometry; dynamic CCSD(T) estimated by the multiplicative scheme p_CCSD(T)(omega) = p_CCSD(T)(0) / p_CCSD(0) x p_CCSD(omega) (Eq. 29). Vibrational corrections by the Bishop-Kirtman perturbation-theoretical method to first order (electrical + mechanical), at the CCSD level at the CCSD-optimised geometry with CCSD harmonic frequencies (761, 1273, 1255 cm^-1, 6-15 % above experiment) and finite-difference property and cubic-force-field derivatives (GAUSSIAN 03 normal coordinates scaled by lambda = 0.01, 0.02 for the potential) (pp. 054315-1 to -4).

Identity checked against the first page (PDF page 2, journal p. 054315-1): Naves, Castro and Fonseca, J. Chem. Phys. 134, 054315 (2011). PDF page 1 is the publisher’s cover; journal pages 054315-1 to -8 = PDF pages 2-9. O3 only. Atomic units throughout.

THE ZERO-POINT VIBRATIONAL CORRECTION (Table IV, image checked, p. 054315-6), mean polarizability, CCSD, optimised geometry, a.u.: omega (hartree) zpva [ ]^{1,0} zpva [ ]^{0,1} pv [mu^2]^{0,0} 0 1.43 0.03 1.41 0.0239 1.45 0.03 -0.08 0.0428 1.51 0.03 -0.02 0.0656 1.63 0.03 -0.01 infinity - - 0.00 [ ]^{1,0} = (1/4) sum_a (1/omega_a) d^2 alpha / dQ_a^2 (Eq. 5, the curvature term) and [ ]^{0,1} = -(1/4) sum_ab (1/(omega_a^2 omega_b)) (d^3V/dQ_a^2 dQ_b) (d alpha / dQ_b) (Eq. 6, the anharmonicity term); the zpva is their sum (Eq. 4), so the TOTAL static zpva is 1.43 + 0.03 = 1.46 a.u. ‘The total zpva correction represents approximately 8% of the electronic contribution’ (p. 054315-6; 1.46/17.12 = 8.5 %, 1.46/19.33 = 7.6 %). The pv column is the pure vibrational (infrared) term [mu^2]^{0,0} (Eq. 7, 10): 1.41 a.u. static, negligible at optical frequencies. - Kumar and Thakkar’s (kumar_2011) ‘1.43 au’ is the [ ]^{1,0} term alone. So is Naves et al.’s own best estimate: ‘given by the sum of the electronic contribution computed at the CCSD(T) level at the experimental geometry and the zpva correction computed at the CCSD level at the optimized geometry, is 18.55 a.u.’ (p. 054315-7) = 17.12 + 1.43 (with 1.46 it would be 18.58). - Sharipov et al. (sharipov_2017, Table 2) tabulate Naves’s values as ZPV 0.216 A^3 = 1.46 a.u. (the total) and PV 0.209 A^3 = 1.41 a.u.; their own ZPV is 0.013 A^3 = 0.088 a.u. from DFT (B97-2) geometries and frequencies with MP4 polarizabilities, and they call their O3 treatment inadequate for its multireference ground state (sharipov_2017 notes). - What in this paper bears on the difference (the paper does not compare): (i) the corrections are CCSD at the CCSD-optimised geometry, whose harmonic frequencies are 6, 12 and 15 % above experiment (p. 054315-4; the [ ]^{1,0} term scales as 1/omega_a, so experimental frequencies would raise it, all else equal); (ii) the property derivatives are those of CCSD, which is far from converged for O3: orbital relaxation alone lowers the static mean by 15 % (19.77 -> 16.74) and the authors state that ‘Since the zpva correction was calculated at the optimized geometry and does not include contributions of the connected triple excitations, some inaccuracy is expected for this correction’ (p. 054315-7); (iii) the zpva’s frequency dependence (1.43 to 1.63 over 0-0.0656 hartree) follows the curvature of alpha(omega) near low-lying excited states (the CCSD excitation energies 0.0839 and 0.0851 hartree, p. 054315-6). Whether the dynamic derivatives are orbital-relaxed is not stated; since dynamic values in this paper come only from the (orbital-unrelaxed) analytical CCSD response, the dynamic zpva presumably is too (an inference, TC-190). A factor of 16 between 1.43 and 0.088 is not explained by (i)-(iii) quantitatively; it needs a third calculation. - FORMAT NEED: no vocabulary quantity for a vibrational correction to the polarizability (as in sharipov_2017); the values are recorded here, not as datasets.

Electronic results (datasets, all ‘check’: clamped-nucleus, not the gas’s polarizability): Table III means at the four frequencies, CCSD at the optimised and experimental geometries and CCSD(T) (experimental geometry; the dynamic values scaled by Eq. 29); Table II’s orbital-relaxed CCSD static mean. Static components (Table II, image checked): CCSD(T) alpha_xx 29.73, alpha_yy 10.12, alpha_zz 11.50 (mean 17.12, checked); analytical CCSD 33.21, 11.87, 14.22 (19.77). ‘Comparisons between CCSD(T) results show that our values for alpha-bar ... are 11% ... smaller than those obtained by Maroulis’ (maroulis_1999, 19.27) (p. 054315-5). The frequencies: 0.0239, 0.0428, 0.0656 hartree = 1906, 1064.6, 694.6 nm.

Best estimate (text, p. 054315-7): 18.55 a.u., static, CCSD(T) electronic plus zpva, without the pure vibrational term (the ‘optical’ static limit): dataset ‘best_estimate’. Compared there with ‘Two experimental results ... 18.90 a.u. referenced by Mack and Muenter [maroulis_1994/mack_muenter] and ... 19.33 a.u. referenced by Maroulis [maroulis_1999/hohm_refractivity]’, 2 % and 4 % above it: both already curated as reproductions, not extracted again.

kumar_2011/static_i (17.12, CCSD(T)) reproduces this paper’s ccsd_t_expt static value (the original is now in the library).

Not extracted (for a later phase): the first and second hyperpolarizabilities (Tables I, II, III beta and gamma rows, V, VI), the dipole-moment-related definitions.

THIRD-ORDER DATA (2026-09-26; the gamma tables are now extracted, the beta rows and Table V are not). Definitions (Eq. 1, p. 054315-2): E(F) = -mu F - (1/2) alpha F F - (1/6) beta F F F - (1/24) gamma F F F F: the T convention; the molecule in the xz plane, z the C2 axis (as maroulis_1994/1999). Processes: THG gamma(-3w; w, w, w), dc-SHG (eshg), IDRI gamma(-w; w, w, -w) (kerr), dc-K gamma(-w; w, 0, 0) (dc_kerr). Isotropic means (p. 054315-3): Eq. (24) gamma-bar = (1/15) sum (gamma_aabb + gamma_abab + gamma_abba) for THG, dc-SHG and IDRI (component ‘parallel’); Eq. (25) gamma-bar = (1/10) sum (3 gamma_abab - gamma_abba) for dc-K (component ‘K’, the dc Kerr combination). Frequencies 0.0239, 0.0428, 0.0656 hartree (1906, 1064.6, 694.6 nm).

ELECTRONIC gamma (Table III, p. 054315-4, image checked): CCSD analytic response at the optimised and experimental geometries, and CCSD(T) at the experimental geometry, static by finite field (orbital-relaxed) and dynamic by the multiplicative scheme Eq. (29), p_CCSD(T)(w) = p_CCSD(T)(0)/p_CCSD(0) x p_CCSD(w), applied component by component. Static gamma-bar: 1857, 1876, 2710 (CCSD(T), ‘practically doubling’, p. 054315-8; maroulis_1999 has 2642). RESONANCES: the two lowest CCSD excitation energies are 0.0839 and 0.0851 hartree and the third 0.1966 (p. 054315-5): ‘This excludes the dc-SHG and THG values at w = 0.0428 and w = 0.0656 hartree’ from the smooth regime; ‘The remarkable THG value at the experimental geometry for w = 0.0656 hartree [18626, and CCSD(T) 449600] is consequence of the proximity between 3w and the third electronic excitation energy’. Those rows are kept in the files and excluded from the datasets (excluded_rows). ‘the dynamic CCSD(T) results quoted in Table III for frequencies smaller than the resonance frequencies are reasonable estimates’ (p. 054315-5). The IDRI and dc-K values are smooth at all three frequencies (IDRI CCSD(T): 2738, 2792, 2942 against 2710 static), although 2w passes the 0.084 hartree states at 0.0428 hartree for IDRI too (the authors do not comment; these states carry little two-photon strength, apparently).

STATIC COMPONENTS: Table I (basis sets aug-, d-aug-, t-aug-cc-pVTZ, HF and CCSD; images checked; datasets gamma_basis_*) and Table II (analytic CCSD, finite-field CCSD orbital-unrelaxed and relaxed, CCSD(T) relaxed; datasets gamma_method_*). Orbital relaxation lowers the CCSD gamma-bar from 1876 to 1437 and triples raise it to 2710 (gamma_xxxx 2798 -> 8756): ‘The large contributions of the triple excitations obtained for the hyperpolarizabilities of O3 seem to be related to the multireference nature of this molecule’ (p. 054315-4). Checked: (8756 + 539 + 778 + 2 (794 + 721 + 224))/5 = 2710.2.

VIBRATIONAL gamma (Table VI, p. 054315-7, image checked; datasets gamma_pv_<process>_<term>): the pure vibrational terms [alpha^2]^(0,0), [mu beta]^(0,0), [mu^2 alpha]^(1,0), [mu^2 alpha]^(0,1) (Eqs. 14-17, Bishop-Kirtman first order), CCSD/d-aug-cc-pVTZ at the optimised geometry, static and at the three frequencies and the w -> infinity limit (row ‘inf’, kept in the files but excluded from the datasets: no finite wavelength). Their sum is the pure vibrational gamma (not printed as a total): static 217 + 686 + 650 - 6 = 1547, ‘more than 80 % of electronic counterpart’ (p. 054315-7); IDRI 144 - 43 + 0 + 0 = 101 at 0.0239 (145 - 5 = 140 at 0.0656); dc-SHG -5 + 148 - 13 = 130 at 0.0239; THG negligible; dc-K 472 at 0.0239 (‘approximately 25 %’). The zpva correction to gamma is ‘negligible’: static [ ]^(1,0) = -4, [ ]^(0,1) = +4 a.u. (p. 054315-7). Library’s merged cells rebuilt from the image in the script (assertion on each cell). No uncertainty is stated for any gamma.
