(threshold to 8.82 Ry) and Lukirskii et al. (to 20.6 Ry, with his 10 % correction), Schiff and Pekeris’s discrete oscillator strengths, Stewart and Webb’s calculation to 130 Ry and Salpeter and Zaidi’s above, including double excitation (pp. A646-A647).

Contents: 12 datasets; 0 formulas.

Curation notes#

Table I: n - 1 ‘at 1 atm and 0 degrees C calculated from Eq. (2)’, with N ‘the number of helium atoms per cm^3 at standard conditions’ (Loschmidt’s number: an ideal-gas density). Wavelengths in A, from photon energies (vacuum). The authors find their values about 2 % above Cuthbertson and Cuthbertson’s measurements in the visible, and 0.3-2.8 % above Chan and Dalgarno’s variational values at 60-250 nm; ‘the experimental values of the cross sections have errors of 5% or more, so a 2% discrepancy ... is to be anticipated’ (p. A647). Being semi-empirical and 2-5 % uncertain, the values are kept as a check, not fitted.

Table II: sums S(p) = Sum f W^p with W the photon energy in Ry (Eq. 1), ‘given in units of Ry^p’; the totals are extracted per p with scale 2^-p to give atomic units (hartree^p): S(-2) = 0.348 Ry^-2 is 1.392 a.u., i.e. the static polarizability. The per-region contributions are not extracted. ‘The discrepancies are never as large as 5%’ (p. A648).

Also in the text (p. A648): Chan and Dalgarno’s n - 1 = 36.4e-6 at 2000 A (their Table II), against this paper’s 37.4e-6 there; extracted as a reproduced text point.

Recorded bibliographic identity status: VALIDATED_WITH_WARNINGS. This concerns identification of the source; it does not establish the scientific correctness of its contents.
