Source kind: measurement

Recorded technique: Single-pulse (1-on-1) surface damage of oxide films (TiO2, Ta2O5, HfO2, Al2O3, SiO2) at 800 nm, pulse duration 25 fs to 1.3 ps (prism compressor and glass slabs; up-chirped except the shortest; down-chirped pulses gave the same thresholds), beam waist w0 ~ 20 um (knife edge), fluence F = 2W/(pi w0^2) of the measured pulse energy W. Films made by ion-beam sputtering (Laser Zentrum Hannover), ‘dense and nearly amorphous’, 6 lambda/4n0 thick at 800 nm, on 6.35-mm fused-silica substrates. Damage detected by the change of the scattered amplified-spontaneous-emission light seen by a CCD camera-microscope (checked off line by optical microscopy); the sample moved after each pulse; the threshold is the 50 % point of the damage-probability curve. The thresholds are fitted with the rate equation Eq. (1) (multiphoton, avalanche and a decay term) for the figures of merit of Table II.

Materials in structured entries: Al2O3_amorphous, HfO2, SiO2, Ta2O5, TiO2_amorphous

Dataset quantities: avalanche_coefficient, band_gap, effective_mass, electron_trapping_time, multiphoton_ionization_cross_section, refractive_index

Contents: 30 datasets; 2 formulas.

Curation notes#

Journal pages 115109-1 to -7 = pdf pages 1-7. Identity checked against the first page. Surface damage of films (parameters form = film; the site is the film, where ‘two of the standing wave maxima are located at the air-coating and the coating-substrate interface’).

WHAT WAS MEASURED (figures). Fig. 1 (p. 115109-2): the incident breakdown fluence against pulse duration for the five films; Fig. 2: Al2O3 with the Eq. (1) fits (with and without the decay term); Fig. 3 (p. 115109-5): breakdown fluence against band gap at 30 fs and 1.2 ps, normalised to the 5.1-eV film, with Stuart et al.’s bulk fluorides; Fig. 4: contour plot of kappa against alpha and beta_6 (T = 300 fs); Fig. 5 (p. 115109-6): calculated F_th against E_g for alpha = 0, 10 cm^2/J and alpha = (30/E_g + 5) cm^2/J. No threshold is printed: the data are figures only (not digitised). ‘The threshold fluences refer to the incident fluences ... The maximum fluence in all of the films is about 0.7 times the incident fluence independent of the material’ (p. 115109-2). Accuracy: single-pulse thresholds ‘determined by different groups ... fall within a +-15% range’ in a round robin (Ref. 21); ‘the absolute threshold values are also affected by calibration errors of the energy detectors and uncertainties in the spot size measurements’ (p. 115109-2).

TABLES (images checked). Table I (tbl_2091d43cd8a8): n0 at 800 nm, thickness D (nm; TiO2 496, Ta2O5 546, HfO2 568, Al2O3 716, SiO2 790) and E_g. Table II (tbl_e839fc341559): m, alpha (cm^2/J), beta_m^fit (cm^(2m-3) fs^(m-1)/J^m), T (fs), m_r^MPA/m0; the beta_m cells are garbled by the extraction (structural fix in the script). Table III (tbl_0042c8ee1160, p. 115109-4): kappa of F_th proportional to tau_p^kappa with its +-: TiO2 0.28 +- 0.02, Ta2O5 0.33 +- 0.02, HfO2 0.30 +- 0.01, Al2O3 0.27 +- 0.01, SiO2 0.33 +- 0.01 (no quantity: in the formula scaling_law and the avalanche datasets’ notes). Materials: the TiO2 film is registered as TiO2_amorphous, the Al2O3 film as Al2O3_amorphous; Ta2O5 and HfO2 are registered as films; the SiO2 film is SiO2 with form = film.

MODEL (p. 115109-3). Eq. (1): dN/dt = alpha N xi I + beta_m (xi I)^m - N/T, xi ~ 0.66 (Refs. 9, 26), breakdown at N_max = N_cr ~ 1e21 cm^-3 (the critical density at 800 nm), solved for Gaussian pulses; ‘a fit of the data with the MPA or the avalanche term alone is not successful’. The alphas ‘agree well with the results of the numerical simulations in Ref. 2 and the fit results obtained in Ref. 6 for bulk fused silica’ (Stuart et al. 1996; lenzner_1998’s 4 cm^2/J). The text’s ‘beta_3/beta_6 ~ 10^42 (J/cm^2 s)^3’ is TiO2’s beta_3 over SiO2’s beta_6: 1.5e23/9.9e25 x 1e45 = 1.5e42 (Ta2O5’s gives 6.8e43; computed 2026-09-27). With the exact Keldysh rate in place of the MPA term and (alpha, m_r, T) free, ‘The so obtained values for alpha and T were essentially the same’. Pure multiphoton ionization gives kappa = (m - 1)/m >= 0.67; ‘the CB electron density at threshold should vary by more than three orders of magnitude when increasing tau_p from 80 fs to 1.2 ps’ for SiO2 (Eq. 4), against Quere et al.’s factor 20 (p. 115109-5).

CHECKS (computed 2026-09-27). Eq. (2) (formula keldysh_mpa) with Table I’s n0 and E_g and 800 nm reproduces Table II’s reduced masses from its beta_m: solving for m_r gives 26.9, 1.96, 1.56, 5.47, 2.24 against the printed 27.0, 1.9, 1.6, 5.4, 2.2 (TiO2, Ta2O5, HfO2, Al2O3, SiO2), i.e. within the rounding of the two-digit beta_m. Fig. 5’s alpha = (30/E_g + 5) cm^2/J gives 14.1 at 3.3 eV and 8.6 at 8.3 eV (‘decreases from 14 to 9’).

REPRODUCTIONS OF THIS PAPER: dubietis_2019 (its Eq. 4.1 is Eq. (3) here, with kappa printed 0.3; coefficients equal).

(1), a rate per unit volume (as lenzner_1998’s sigma_k), not the dI/dz coefficient of a multiphoton_absorption_coefficient. It ‘represents nonlinear excitation from both the valence band and the laser-induced trap states’. Printed ‘2.3 x 10^24’ (the extraction garbles it; script).

The Al2O3 film’s gap differs from the crystal’s by ‘as large as a few 10%’ (p. 115109-4); a CB trapping time of ~100 ps was measured in crystalline Al2O3 (Ref. 32). Check: Eq. ‘The error bars on c1 and c2 refer to the standard deviation of the best fit values obtained at different pulse durations. The error bar on kappa is the uncertainty of the best fit values for the different materials’ (p. 115109-5). ‘To obtain the critical incident fluence when dealing with thin films, Eq. (3) has to be divided by the correction factor xi that takes into account interference effects.’ Stuart et al.’s fluorides follow the same E_g trend, suggesting a constant material-type factor.
