Source kind: theory

Recorded technique: Variationally stable calculation of the static and dynamic dipole polarizability of ground-state helium, nonrelativistic: the ground and intermediate 1P^o functions in a coupled-channel hyperspherical representation (adiabatic potential curves, Figs. 1-2), with Slater-type basis functions with and without logarithmic terms in the hyperradius (R^n ln R; the triple-collision behaviour), the variational parameters optimised; up to N_c = N_c’ = 6 coupled channels for the ground and intermediate states (Tables I-IV).

WHAT IS TAKEN. Table VI (p. 9, tbl_4cd6e269513a; image checked), the column ‘This work’ (the best result, N_c = N_c’ = 6): alpha(omega) in atomic units at 32 photon energies from 0.050 to 0.845 a.u., below and through the 1s2p resonance (omega about 0.78) and up to the 1s3p one. Not taken: the other columns (Refs. [16]-[19] and the experiment of Ref. [18], other papers’ values) and Table V’s static values (1.383193 to 1.38317394, 1.4e-5 below Pachucki and Sapirstein’s 1.383192174, the accuracy to expect of Table VI below resonance).

THE SIGNS. The library read every minus glyph of the table as a ‘2’; the extraction script restores the ten negative values from 0.782 to 0.820 a.u. against the image (tools/extract/masili_2003.py).

THE RESONANCE. Near omega = 0.78 a.u. alpha diverges (1765.87 at 0.780, -90.33 at 0.782), and its values there depend on the computed 1s2p energy (Table VII compares the resonance positions extrapolated from Fig. 4(b) with the literature): they test a model of the resonance, not optmat’s below-resonance dispersion. Below 0.75 a.u. the values agree with liu_1997’s Table I (which stops at 0.75) within 5e-5 up to 0.55 a.u.; nearer the resonance they are lower, by 0.04 % at 0.65, 0.2 % at 0.70 and 2.5 % at 0.75 a.u., as their resonance positions differ (TC-855).
