Source kind: theory
Recorded technique: Kramers-Heisenberg sum over discrete oscillator strengths and an integral over photoabsorption cross sections (Huffman et al., Samson), the discrete strengths (Knox’s Hartree-Fock values for Ar, Koch’s for the Kr and Xe resonance lines) adjusted so that the set reproduces the visible Verdet constants (Ingersoll and Liebenberg) to 2 % and the visible refractivity (Koch 1949, Larsen 1939) to 0.01 %.
Materials in structured entries: Ar, Kr, Xe
Dataset quantities: refractivity, verdet_constant
Contents: 9 datasets; 0 formulas.
Curation notes#
Eq. (1): n - 1 = 1.0007e-4 sum’ f_m / ((E_m - E_0)^2 - E^2) at NTP, energies in rydbergs; the constant is 2 pi N_L a_0^3 x 4 with Loschmidt’s number, so the values refer to the ideal-gas density at 0 degrees C and 1 atm (density ‘ideal’). Eq. (2): V = 5.871e-8 sum’ E^2 f_m / ((E_m - E_0)^2 - E^2)^2 in rad/(Oe cm atm). The paper gives no uncertainty for Tables I and II; the uncertainties of Table III’s calculated values ‘are due to the uncertainties in the measured wavelengths’ (p. 2). Wavelengths are nominal vacuum wavelengths.
All calculated datasets are theory, kept as checks (use ‘check’); Bideau-Mehu et al. 1981, Langhoff and Karplus 1969 and Tang and Poon 1974 reproduce Table I. Tang and Poon’s Table VI prints Kingston’s xenon value at 1900 A as 9.984; Kingston’s Table I prints 9.884 (table image checked 2026-09-24).
The text (p. 2) argues from the calculation that Gill and Heddle’s 1216 A values for Kr (|n - 1| = 53e-4) and Xe (172e-4) are ‘much too high’; they are not extracted here (see gill_1963).
Recorded bibliographic identity status: VALIDATED_WITH_WARNINGS. This concerns identification of the source; it does not establish the scientific correctness of its contents.
