Source kind: measurement

Recorded technique: Cary recording spectrophotometer (quartz optics), a Nestor-type H2 lamp (UV) or tungsten lamp (visible), 1P28 photomultipliers; a 10 cm quartz cell between the exit slit and the detector (to minimise photochemistry); slit widths 0.01 to several hundredths mm (UV), a few hundredths to a few thousandths (visible), set automatically during the scan. Ozone vaporised from liquid ozone purified by fractional distillation, at least 90-95 % pure by KI titration (average 92 %, corrected for), nitrogen oxides below 1 in 2000 by mass spectrometry; 0.3-650 mm Hg (H2SO4 manometer, expansion method, mercury manometer); a decay curve per run corrected the thermal decomposition (at most about 12 % in 5-10 minutes); cell flushed repeatedly because of wall adsorption. ‘All measurements were made at about 27 C’ (pp. 870-871).

Curation notes#

Identity checked against the first page (PDF page 1, journal p. 870): Inn and Tanaka, J. Opt. Soc. Am. 43, 870 (1953). Journal pages 870-872 = PDF pages 1-3; PDF page 4 begins another paper (Richardson et al.). O3 only.

The absorption coefficients are given only in figures: Fig. 1 (2000-3000 A, Hartley, with Ny and Choong, Vassy and Tanaka et al.), Fig. 2 (3000-3500 A, Huggins, ‘plotted by evaluating the maxima and minima of all bands with a few points chosen between bands’) and Fig. 3 (4000-7500 A, Chappuis, the average of two runs at 639.5 and 655.5 mm Hg). ‘Over 200 different wavelengths’ were measured (p. 871) but no table is printed. What the text states is recorded (page images of pp. 871-872 checked).

Quantity (p. 871): I = I0 10^(-alpha x), ‘x the layer thickness reduced to NTP and alpha the absorption coefficient in cm^-1’: a DECADIC coefficient at NTP (0 C, 1 atm), so sigma = ln(10) alpha / n0. Figures’ axes read ‘cm^-1, base 10’. Temperature about 27 C (300 K). Wavelengths in A, read ‘to the nearest +-1A in the ultraviolet region, while in the visible, to the nearest +-5A’ (p. 871); vacuum or air not stated (a Cary spectrophotometer reads air wavelengths, presumably; the difference, 0.6-2 A, is within the reading uncertainty). Resolution not stated (‘lower resolution’ than Ny and Choong, p. 872).

Accuracy: ‘The maximum deviation from the average alpha value amounted to about +-5 percent’ (p. 871); in the Chappuis band the two runs ‘agreed to 5 percent or better’, and the wavelengths of the broad maxima ‘may have an uncertainty of somewhat more than +-5A’ (p. 872). Comparisons (p. 872): lower than Ny and Choong by a few per cent to about 20 % in 2000-3000 A (also at the Huggins maxima and minima), ‘somewhat greater than can be explained by experimental error’; agreement with Tanaka et al. (tanaka_1953) in 2000-2200 A; in the Chappuis band about 10 % above Colange at the maximum and about 20 % below Vassy and Vigroux. The authors conclude ‘the true absorption coefficients lie somewhere between our values and those of Ny and Choong’.

Text value not extracted: the Chappuis maximum alpha_max = 0.055 cm^-1 (decadic, p. 872), whose wavelength the text does not state (Fig. 3 shows it near 6000 A: figure only). No pressure effect over a 25-fold pressure change (p. 872).

Recorded bibliographic identity status: VALIDATED_WITH_WARNINGS. This concerns identification of the source; it does not establish the scientific correctness of its contents.

p. 872: ‘The oscillator strength or f value of this continuum was calculated to be 0.088’ (the continuum underlying the Hartley bands, Region 1, 2000-3000 A; how it was integrated is not stated). Index abscissa: an integrated strength over the band, not a line. Compare kumar_2011’s interval strength of the 4.35-5.39 eV interval (0.079). A check.

p. 872: ‘Underlying the broad bands in this region we note a weak continuum starting from about 4000A and extending beyond 7500A. The f value calculated for this absorption continuum was about 2 x 10^-5’ (printed ‘2 x 10^-5’, approximate). The continuum under the Chappuis bands, not the Chappuis band total. Index abscissa. A check.
