Source kind: measurement
Recorded technique: Scanned, polarization-analyzed CARS with a single-mode frequency-doubled Nd:YAG pump (532 nm, < 50 MHz) and a dye-laser Stokes (1.1 GHz) on binary mixtures of about 5 % N2 in propane and n-butane (cell, 0.4-1 atm, 297 K) and in the post-flame gases of an H2-O2-N2 flame (1570 K, water vapour); the N2 Q-branch resonant susceptibility (modified exponential-gap linewidth model fitted to inverse-Raman linewidths, Schrotter and Klockner’s cross section, curated as schrotter_1979) is the calibration standard.

Curation notes#
Nonresonant CARS susceptibilities of propane, n-butane and water vapour, none of them curated species: their values (Table 2, 10^-18 (cm^3/erg)/amagat: effective chi_nr C3H8 98 +- 12, n-C4H10 122 +- 15; electronic C3H8 80 +- 12, n-C4H10 100 +- 12, H2O 18.5 +- 2 (per atm at 273 K); off-resonant Raman 3 chi_1111,buf C3H8 18 +- 4, n-C4H10 22 +- 8) are not extracted. The only curated entry is N2’s reference value, 8.5 +- 2 x 10^-18 (cm^3/erg)/amagat, taken from Farrow and Rahn 1985 (Ref. 9, farrow_1985).
Definitions (p. 1241): ‘In general 3 chi(3) = 3 chi_r + chi_nr’ (so chi_nr is three times a chi_1111 in the paper’s normalization of the resonant term); Eq. (1): 3 chi_1111(3)(w) = (N/hbar) alpha . G^-1 . p . alpha, with N the number density per amagat and alpha_j = (c^2/w_1^2)(d sigma/d Omega)_j^1/2; Eq. (6): the anti-Stokes intensity |3 chi_1111,N2 Phi(rho_N2) + 3 chi_1111,buf Phi(rho_buf) + chi_nr,N2 Phi(1/3) + chi_nr,buf Phi(1/3)|^2, Phi(rho) = cos theta cos phi + rho sin theta sin phi (Eq. (7)). The chi_nr are thus the same CARS-literature quantity as farrow_1985’s (chi^CARS per amagat, gamma_T = 2 chi_nr/N0). The abstract and the water section quote N2’s 8.5 x 10^-18 once per amagat and once ‘(cm^3/erg)/atm’ (p. 1244): an inconsistency of units in the text. Stated accuracy of the present results ‘~+-12 %’ (p. 1244).
