Source kind: measurement

Recorded technique: Relative permittivity of CF3H-Ar and CFH3-Ar mixtures (and pure argon) at 50.0 degrees C (NBS-calibrated thermometer, 0.1 degrees C absolute; gradients < 0.05 degrees C): three-terminal parallel-plate cells (Orcutt and Cole; 98 pF, stable to 2 ppm) and a transformer bridge (General Radio 1493, 0.1 ppm relative). B_eps/A_eps^2 from the cyclic expansion method with two or three cells from 40-200 atm; A_eps and B_p from low-pressure data (Texas Instruments 0-100 psi quartz spiral gauge), [(eps - 1)/(eps + 2)](RT/P) = A_eps + (B_eps - A_eps B_p)(P/RT) (Eq. 2). Mixture viscosities at 25 degrees C by a capillary viscometer (pp. 2-3).

SCOPE. Argon only: CF3H and CFH3 are not curated species. Table I’s first row (mole fraction 0) is pure argon: this work’s A_eps = 4.1406 +- 0.0014 cm^3/mole and, in parentheses, Bose and Cole’s (1970) A_eps = 4.1396 +- 0.0006 and B_eps = 0.72 +- 0.12 cm^6/mole^2 (footnote a: ‘Values from T. K. Bose and R. H. Cole, J. Chem. Phys. 52, 140 (1970)’; bose_1970, whose A_eps is 4.1397 +- 0.0006: re-pointed 2026-09-27); this work’s pure-argon B_eps and C_eps are not given (’...’). The text (p. 2) uses ‘A_eps1 = 4.140 cm^3/mole for argon’ to compute the mixtures’ mole fractions. ‘The small differences are accounted for by slight irreproducibility of the cells used by Sutter and a suspected slight impurity of the CFH3 used in this work’ (p. 3; said of the pure components generally).

WHAT A_eps IS. f = (eps - 1)/(eps + 2) = A_eps (n/V) + B_eps (n/V)^2 + ... (Eq. 1), static (bridge frequency); for argon the electronic static polarizability. B_eps is the static dielectric second virial coefficient (for argon an induction term only, no orientation part).

UNCERTAINTY. The +- of Tables I and II are not described anywhere in the paper (level ‘not stated’); the group’s other papers quote three standard deviations.

Not extracted: the mixture rows of Tables I and II (A_eps, B_eps, C_eps, B_p), argon’s B_p (-11.6 +- 1.5 cm^3/mole, no quantity), the mixed B_eps12 and B_p12, the viscosities (Table III: argon 226.2 x 1e-6 P at 25 degrees C) and Table IV’s model parameters (argon alpha = 1.64e-24 cm^3, an input to the calculations; 4.1406 cm^3/mol is 1.6413e-24 cm^3, computed 2026-09-26).

Table I, pure argon, in parentheses (footnote a): A_eps = 4.1396 +- 0.0006 cm^3/mole, Bose and Cole (1970) = bose_1970 (re-pointed 2026-09-27), static dielectric. The original prints 4.1397 +- 0.0006 at 49.7 degrees C: this reprint is one lower in the last digit (image of both tables checked; kept as printed). The original’s errors are three standard deviations: level corrected to ‘3 sigma’.
