Recorded technique: Sum-over-states perturbation theory with explicitly correlated (Hylleraas-type geminal) wave functions for the 1S, 1P and 1D states of helium, their nonlinear parameters optimised by maximising the property computed.
Materials in structured entries: He
Dataset quantities: hyperpolarizability, polarizability
Contents: 16 datasets; 8 formulas.
Curation notes#
The paper is about the dynamic second hyperpolarizability gamma (Tables II-V, Kerr, DFWM, ESHG, THG) and the dipole-quadrupole and quadrupole polarizabilities B and C (Table VI); none of these is linear dipole data, and none is extracted here. The only linear value is the static dipole polarizability in the text (p. 3550): ‘by maximizing the dipole polarizability (we find alpha = 1.383 192 a.u., in good agreement with past accurate calculations, see Ref. 6)’. The value is for the nonrelativistic, infinite-mass atom (see liu_1997 on the mass scaling). The library’s cover page notes a published erratum (J. Chem. Phys. 103, 5868 (1995)), not in the library; it concerns the hyperpolarizabilities, as far as its title shows.
THIRD-ORDER DATA (2026-09-26). The gamma tables are now extracted; the statement above that nothing but alpha is extracted refers to the linear phase. The erratum (bishop_1995, now in the library) corrects only Table VI’s dipole-quadrupole polarizability B(omega) (a programming error); the gamma values of Tables II-V stand.
Definitions (p. 3549). Eq. (1): the Orr-Ward sum-over-states expression, gamma_abgd(-w_s; w1, w2, w3) = hbar^-3 sum_P [ sum_mnp <g|mu_a|m><m|mu_d|n><n|mu_g|p><p|mu_b|g> / ((w_mg - w_s)(w_ng - w1 - w2)(w_pg - w1)) - sum_mn ... ], sum_P over the 24 permutations of the frequencies with their subscripts, w_s = w1 + w2 + w3. No factor K appears, and the static limit is the same for every process: this is the Taylor-series (T) convention of Shelton and Rice (Chem. Rev. 94, 3 (1994), Eqs. 1-3 with the K factors of their Table I in the expansion of mu), who take these values unchanged as the He calibration (their Table VI and p. 11 of the review, pdf page 9: ‘the accuracy of their final ab initio results is thought to be better than 0.1 %’). PROCESS NAMES: Bishop’s ‘Kerr’ is the dc Kerr effect gamma(-w; w, 0, 0) (process dc_kerr), his ‘DFWM’ is gamma(-w; -w, w, w), the intensity-dependent index (process kerr); ESHG gamma(-2w; 0, w, w), THG gamma(-3w; w, w, w). Two independent components gamma_zzzz and gamma_xxzz except in the static limit and for THG, where 3 gamma_xxzz = gamma_zzzz (p. 3549). gamma_zzzz of an atom is Shelton and Rice’s gamma_parallel (the isotropic average <gamma>_zzzz); gamma_xxzz is not their gamma_perp = <gamma>_zxxz of a dc Kerr or ESHG experiment in general, but the dc Kerr gamma_K = (3/2)(gamma_zzzz - gamma_xxzz) (note added in proof, p. 3551): 44.73 a.u. at 5145 A and 44.17 a.u. at 6328 A, which the Kerr columns of Table II reproduce (44.7285, 44.169; checked 2026-09-26).
Units and mass. Atomic units; ‘the SI equivalents are 6.241 36 x 10^-65 C^4 m^4 J^-3 ... for gamma ... These conversions are based on a reduced electron mass appropriate for the helium nucleus’ (p. 3549). The standard atomic unit is 6.235 377e-65 (Shelton and Rice, Table II); 6.235377e-65 x (1 + m_e/m_alpha)^7 = 6.24136e-65, so the tabulated numbers are infinite-nuclear-mass atomic units and the physical 4He gamma in standard atomic units is 0.096 % larger. Shelton and Rice’s Table VI ‘include the reduced mass correction’ (dc Kerr 632.8 nm: 44.211 = 44.169 x 1.00096). The frequencies of Table III are in standard (infinite-mass) hartree: Table II’s values are reproduced by a spline of Table III at omega = 2 pi c / lambda with lambda as printed taken as a VACUUM wavelength (rms 0.0015 a.u. over the THG column, where the frequency sensitivity is largest), against 0.009 a.u. with reduced-mass hartree and 0.021 a.u. with lambda read as air (checked 2026-09-26). Table II’s wavelengths are therefore recorded as vacuum.
Part: electronic (He has no vibration or rotation). The values are nonrelativistic. Accuracy: the static gamma_zzzz 43.104 and C(0) agree ‘completely’ with Buckingham and Hibbard’s variation-perturbation values (p. 3550); ‘we have no reason to believe that our dynamic values will deviate from this accuracy’ (p. 3551). No number is stated: the datasets carry no uncertainty.
Dispersion fits (Tables IV and V, images checked; formulas below). Eqs. (9), (10): gamma_par(w)/gamma_par(0) = 1 + A w_L^2 + A’ w_L^4 and gamma_perp(w)/gamma_perp(0) = 1 + B w_L^2 + B’ w_L^4, with w_L^2 = w_s^2 + w1^2 + w2^2 + w3^2 in atomic units (hartree^2), gamma_par = gamma_zzzz, gamma_perp = gamma_xxzz, gamma_par(0) = 43.104, gamma_perp(0) = 14.368. So w_L^2 = 2 w^2 (dc Kerr), 4 w^2 (DFWM), 6 w^2 (ESHG), 12 w^2 (THG). MAPPING TO SHELTON: Shelton’s gamma = gamma_0 (1 + A nu_L^2 + B nu_L^4) with nu_L in cm^-1 is Bishop’s Eq. (9): Shelton A = Bishop A / (219474.6307 cm^-1)^2 (2.189 -> 0.4544e-10 cm^2) and Shelton B = Bishop A’ / (219474.6307)^4 (3.494 -> 0.1506e-20 cm^4, 3.602 -> 0.1552e-20). Bishop’s B and B’ belong to the perpendicular component gamma_xxzz, not to Shelton’s B. The text: A is ‘constant for all four processes; A’ is the same (approximately) for Kerr and ESHG; and B follows quite precisely the ratio 1:(1 + k/2):(1 + k/3):(1 + k/6) for processes Kerr:DFWM:ESHG:THG, with k/6 = 0.161’; or Bishop’s 1:(3 + delta)/2:(4 + delta)/3:(7 + delta)/6 ‘with delta = -0.0326’ (p. 3551).
Experimental He values quoted (note added in proof, p. 3551): gamma^Kerr = 47.2 +- 3 a.u. at 5145 A (Carusotto et al. 1985), 54 +- 4 (Buckingham and Dunmur 1968) and 52 +- 8 (Boyle et al. 1966) at 6328 A: dataset expt_dc_kerr (reproduced). The ESHG ratio gamma_par/gamma_perp = 2.949 at 4880 A (Mizrahi and Shelton 1985, Ref. 13; theory 2.950) is a ratio of components, noted here only.
Second copy: Bishop_1989_ImprovedDynamicHyperpolarizabilities_033679 (a second download of the same PDF, 4 pages): its six tables’ cells are identical to this copy’s (Tables IV and V are listed in the other order; compared 2026-09-26).
Not extracted: Table I (wave-function parameters) and Table VI (B and C field-gradient polarizabilities; B corrected by bishop_1995).
