weber_2003 ========== M\. J\. Weber, Handbook of Optical Materials \(CRC Press, Boca Raton, 2003\), ISBN 0\-8493\-3512\-4; Section 1\.3\.4, "Dispersion Formulas for Refractive Indices", pp\. 75\-76 `Source record `__ · :doc:`Catalogue ` · :doc:`Review register ` No DOI is recorded. **Source kind:** compilation **Recorded technique:** A handbook\: Section 1\.3\.4 tabulates 'Dispersion formulas for the refractive indices of crystals at room temperature' \(p\. 75\), one row per crystal with the formula \(wavelength in um\), its range and a reference\. Only sapphire's row is curated here\. **Materials in structured entries:** Al2O3 **Dataset quantities:** None recorded. **Contents:** 0 datasets; 2 formulas. Curation notes -------------- Not a paper and not in the paper library\: J\. C\. Travers supplied the book's section PDFs \(2026\-09\-28; a private copy, 3512\_S01\.pdf, SHA\-256 a06ffe6f173adf0a89cd7bfd0b9c0589ed34e20e5461bfd4e96da64679b08f60, book p\. 76 = pdf p\. 75\)\. The two formulas below were transcribed from the page's text layer and checked against the page image digit by digit \(2026\-09\-28\)\. WHAT THE ROW IS\. 'Al2O3', ordinary and extraordinary ray, range 0\.22\-5\.0 um, Ref\. 13\: 'Malitson, I\. H\. and Dodge, M\. J\., Refractive index and birefringence of synthetic sapphire, J\. Opt\. Soc\. Am\. 62, 1405 \(1972\)' \(p\. 89\), a talk abstract \(not in the library\)\. The formulas are that work's, reprinted; this handbook is where optmat reads them\. refractiveindex\.info \(main/Al2O3/nk/Malitson\-o and Malitson\-e, which solprop's sapphire uses\) cites them from M\. J\. Dodge, 'Refractive index', Handbook of Laser Science and Technology IV \(CRC Press, 1986\), p\. 30, 'at 20 C', and prints the ordinary ray's first coefficient to one digit less \(1\.4313493 against 1\.43134936 here\)\. CONDITIONS\. 'At room temperature' \(the section's heading text\); read as 20 C, the temperature refractiveindex\.info gives for the same formulas\. The index medium is not stated\: like Malitson's 1962 formula of the same laboratory's prisms \(malitson\_1962, TC\-546\), relative to the room air and on the lines' air wavelengths, an inference from the NBS method\. Against malitson\_1962's formula \(24 C\) at the same wavelength argument, both relative to air, this ordinary ray is 9\.4e\-5 lower at 0\.3 um, 5\-8e\-5 at 0\.4\-2 um, 0\.9e\-5 at 4 um and 6\.5e\-5 higher at 5 um; 4 K of temperature \(dn/dT about \+13e\-6/K\) accounts for about 5e\-5 of it\. THE BIREFRINGENCE n\_o \- n\_e from the two formulas is 0\.0091 at 0\.3 um, 0\.0085 at 0\.4 um, 0\.0079 at 1 um, 0\.0070 at 4 um and 0\.0056 at 5 um\. Datasets -------- No datasets are recorded.
