Relative yields in arbitrary units\: the scale A of Eqs\. \(1\) and \(3\) 'rescales the yield to account for both the unknown atomic density and detector efficiency' \(p\. 2\) and is free for every gas and every model compared \('A is allowed to vary in order to account for the unknown gas density', p\. 3\)\. Only the shape of the yield against intensity is measured, never a probability\. The yields are averaged over the focal volume in two dimensions and over the carrier\-envelope phase \('Effects of carrier\-envelope phase on the theoretical yields were negligible', p\. 2\)\. 'Depletion of the noble\-gas atoms to multiply charged states was observed but the effect found to be negligible in this intensity regime' \(p\. 3\)\. ACCURACY \(quoted\)\. H\: 'certifying that our data are free of systematic error to within our 2% measurement precision\. A value of eta\_1 = 0\.641 \+\- 0\.007 is found, indicating that we can calibrate the laser peak intensity to a theory\-certified accuracy of better than 1\.1% without systematic error'; 'Neglecting background subtraction shifts eta\_1 by 3\.1%' \(p\. 2\)\. The independent estimate I\_est is 'often as large as 50%' in error \(p\. 2\)\. Noble gases\: 'While the data are accurate at the 2% level, the theoretical predictions agree with the data only at the tens of percent level, with both ADK rates performing poorly' \(p\. 3\)\. I\_c\: 'Our values for I\_c include the uncertainty in the H\+ calibration as well as the fit error, and demonstrate our ability to calibrate the intensity at the 1\.3%, 1\.5%, and 2\.5% levels using Ar, Kr, and Xe as gas targets, respectively \[27\]'; ref\. 27\: 'we have here stated the 1 sigma standard deviation for I\_c, i\.e\., the 68% confidence interval' \(pp\. 4, 5\)\. Sensitivity \(p\. 4\)\: 'variations of the pulse duration by 10% may cause a rescaling of the overall yield, but cause \< 1% shifts in the retrieved intensity'; 'changes of the wavelength by 50 nm affect the retrieved intensity by \< 1%'; good agreement for H 'with beam M^2 factors as high as 1\.5'; pulse\-energy fluctuations 'of at least 0\.7% \(root mean square\)' are tolerated\. Range\: 'The intensity range covered by our calibration, \(1\-5\) x 10^14 W/cm^2' \(p\. 4\)\. THE THEORIES COMPARED \(p\. 3, figures only\)\. Noble gases\: 3D TDSE 'under the single\-active electron approximation with the second\-order\-split operator method in the energy representation \[23,24\]', model potentials of ref\. 22 \(Tong and Lin 2005, tong\_2005\) from density functional theory with self\-interaction correction; ADK and empirically corrected ADK \(ref\. 22\) 'using a weighted sum of m\_l = 0, 1 for the p\-orbital \(l = 0\) and ground\-state ionization potentials' \(as printed\: l = 0 for a p orbital is a slip\); 'As a nonrelativistic model was used, the fine\-structure splitting was ignored'\. With eta fixed to 1 and A free, all three disagree with the data at the tens\-of\-percent level \(Fig\. 2\(d\)\-\(f\), read on the figure\: the TDSE lies 20\-30 % above the Ar data at 1\.3\-1\.7e14 W/cm^2 and 10\-17 % below it above 4e14; ADK lies 60\-75 % below the Ar data at the low end\)\. 'Because of the constrained fit parameter, ADK and empirical ADK \(Emp\-ADK\) fits are weighted more heavily towards the higher intensities \.\.\. This results in an artifact where ADK appears to fit better than Emp\-ADK\. Removing the constraint on the eta parameter vastly improves the fit; however, the retrieved eta is significantly different' \(p\. 3\)\. EXTRACTED\.
