bejot_2010 ========== P\. Bejot, J\. Kasparian, S\. Henin, V\. Loriot, T\. Vieillard, E\. Hertz, O\. Faucher, B\. Lavorel and J\.\-P\. Wolf, Phys\. Rev\. Lett\. 104, 103903 \(2010\) `Source record `__ · :doc:`Catalogue ` · :doc:`Review register ` DOI: `10\.1103/physrevlett\.104\.103903 `__ **Source kind:** theory **Recorded technique:** Numerical filamentation simulations \(scalar envelope NLSE with diffraction, GVD, instantaneous Kerr terms up to n8 \(air\) or n10 \(Ar\), plasma defocusing, inverse bremsstrahlung and multiphoton absorption; multi\-species PPT ionisation\) of a 1 mJ, 30 fs, 800 nm pulse focused by f = 1 m in 1 bar of air or argon, with the higher\-order Kerr coefficients of Loriot et al\. \(2009\) as corrected\. **Materials in structured entries:** Ar, N2, O2 **Dataset quantities:** nonlinear\_index **Contents:** 3 datasets; 0 formulas. Curation notes -------------- The library's first copy is the HAL author version \(hal\-00464524, 5 pages, submitted 17 Mar 2010\); the second copy \(Bejot\_2010\_HigherOrderKerr\_c718b7\) is the published PRL\. Their Tables I and II are identical \(both images checked\) and the text is the same apart from copy\-editing; the published copy's table CSVs are garbled by the extraction, so the first copy's are used\. Values\: Table I \(N2, O2, air 'at 1 bar pressure, and interpolation to air, as used in the present work \[17\]'\) and Table II \(Ar at 1 bar\); ref\. \[17\] is Loriot et al\., Opt\. Express 17, 13429 \(2009\) with its erratum 18, 3011 \(2010\)\. 'As compared with previously published data \[17\], we used values of the higher\-order refractive indices \(Table I\) incorporating the correction for the coherent artifact \[19\] \(Oudar, IEEE J\. Quantum Electron\. 19, 713, 1983\), i\.e\. adequately subtracting \[spelt with an extra s in the paper\] its electronic contribution at play in the original measurement \.\.\. This correction results in dividing each n\_2\*j term by j \+ 1' \(p\. 3\); for argon 'we refined the corresponding indices to take the coherent artifact into account' \(p\. 4\)\. The values equal the erratum's \(loriot\_2010\) to the printed digits, with a few rounded \(n4 N2 \-0\.5 \+\- 0\.27 against \-0\.53 \+\- 0\.26; air n2 1\.2 \+\- 0\.23 against 1\.2 \+\- 0\.3\) and the units rewritten\: n2 10^\-19 cm^2/W, n4 10^\-33 cm^4/W^2, n6 10^\-46 \(Ar\: 10^\-45\) cm^6/W^3, n8 10^\-59 cm^8/W^4, n10 10^\-74 cm^10/W^5\. Only n2 is extracted, as reproduced from loriot\_2009\. Convention \(p\. 2\-3\)\: Delta n\_Kerr = n2 I \+ n4 I^2 \+ n6 I^3 \+ n8 I^4 \+ \.\.\. with 'the n\_2\*j coefficients \.\.\. related to chi\(2\*j\+1\) susceptibilities'; the NLSE term is i \(k0/n0\) \(sum\_j n\_2\*j \|eps\|^\(2j\)\) eps with \|eps\|^2 = I, so the coefficients are self \(single\-beam\) coefficients\. 'Owing to the short pulse duration \(30 fs\) used in the simulations, the delayed orientational response is disregarded' \(p\. 3\)\. Higher\-order Kerr claim \(notes only\)\: with the Table I/II coefficients the higher\-order terms, not the plasma, provide the main defocusing of filaments in air and argon at 800 nm \(clamped intensity 31\.6 against 78 TW/cm^2 in air, electron density 1\.1e15 against 4\.2e16 cm^\-3; Ar 28\.5 against 80\.9 TW/cm^2\)\. Higher orders as used\: N2 n4 \-0\.5 \+\- 0\.27, n6 1\.4 \+\- 0\.15, n8 \-0\.44 \+\- 0\.04; O2 n4 \-5\.2 \+\- 0\.5, n6 4\.8 \+\- 0\.5, n8 \-2\.1 \+\- 0\.14; Ar n4 \-0\.37 \+\- 1, n6 0\.4 \+\- 0\.05 \(x 10^\-45\), n8 \-1\.7 \+\- 0\.1, n10 8\.8 \+\- 0\.5 \(units above\)\. Status\: refuted \(see loriot\_2009's notes\: Wahlstrand et al\. 2013 explain the measured inversion as a plasma\-grating artefact; Wahlstrand et al\. 2012 and 2018 measure a response linear in intensity up to ionisation\)\.
